London Routemaster Hybrid enters service giving twice the MPG and half the emissions

London Routemaster Hybrid enters service giving twice the MPG and half the emissions

The new Routemaster Hybrid which offers twice the MPG as it’s diesel sibling, hit the dark and gritty streets of London for first time yesterday. The bus is currently serving route 38 for  the lucky people traveling between Victoria and Hackney.

The Hypermiling hybrid bus, modelled on the classic Routemaster, was meant to enter service last week but due to red tape at the Department for Transport it was delayed.

The bus features a diesel-electric hybrid drive system that works a little differently to the current crop of production hybrid cars. It’s diesel engine works as a generator for the electric motor rather than put power to the wheels. The 4.5L diesel unit simply “ticks” over at 1300RPM while powering and recharging the battery packs. This combined with the single speed transition means that the bus offers a very smooth ride for its 87 seats.

The new hybrid double decker 15 per cent more fuel efficient than existing hybrid buses and more than 40 per cent more efficient than existing diesel double-deckers. It’s secondary electric drive system also helps to reduce noise pollution.

The program has already come under fire from Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy who has rasied concerns regarding the rather steep price tag of the new buses. Each hybrid routemaster costs a whopping £1.4m compared to just £190,000 for a standard double-decker.

Green campaigners have also noted that only 52 of the 800 buses destined for the capitals city streets will be Hybrid. Quashing previous claims by Boris Johnson that all buses entering service from 2o12 will feature hybrid technology.

Boris has defended his new green red hybrids, calling them “the very best in British design, engineering and manufacture. But it’s not just a pretty face, the green innards of this red bus mean it is twice as fuel efficient as a diesel bus and the most environment-friendly of its kind.

“When ordered in greater numbers it will make a significant economic contribution to the manufacturing industries, while also helping deliver a cleaner, greener and more pleasant city.”

Test figures have shown that the Route master Hybrid emits only 640 grams per kilometre (g/km) of carbon dioxide and 3.96 g/km of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). This is less than half the level of carbon dioxide and NOx emitted by a derv powered people movers.

Fuel campaigners to meet government minister to over soaring fuel prices

fair fuel uk Fuel campaigners to meet government minister to over soaring fuel prices

Fuel Campaigners are to meet Treasury minister Chloe Smith today to demand action over fuel prices. Millions of motorists and businesses are being crippled over soaring fuel prices that are starting to peak at over £1.50 a litre in some filling stations across the UK.

The figures show that Britain has the highest diesel prices of any country in the EU, while the price of unleaded petrol is the eighth highest.

If campaigners are unsuccessful the postponed rise in fuel tax from January this year will bite, adding 3.02ppl to a litre of fuel from August 2012.

Chancellor George Osborne has already refused to slash fuel duty in next month’s Budget, saying he had already done enough to help drivers and that “the British government has run out of money”.

Campaign group FairFuelUK said high levels of fuel duty meant that petrol pump prices were now around 20p a litre more expensive than the EU average.

Quentin Willson, the group’s main spokesman, said: “We pay tax on our earnings so that we can buy these vital commodities, and then we pay VAT on the fuel duty. The Europe league table of fuel duty levels is one which we should not be top of. Today we will be meeting the Treasury to demonstrate that a cut in duty will help Treasury revenues, not harm them.”

Fuel prices hurting hauliers and customers say the RHA. Urging rethink over fuel duty rises to protect industry

rha fuel prices hauliers hypermiling mpg Fuel prices hurting hauliers and customers say the RHA. Urging rethink over fuel duty rises to protect industryRoad Haulage Association’s  latest weekly fuel price survey has shown that hauliers pay on average 116.33 pence before VAT (139.60 after VAT.) for a litre of diesel fuel. The rocketing price of road diesel is a major concern to many hauliers who are finding it hard to stay afloat during the economic downturn.

Director of Policy Jack Semple said, ”Diesel has never cost so much and there is nothing the industry can do about it. This is bad news for customers because haulage rates simply have to keep pace with rising costs. For a typical articulated lorry, diesel represents at least 35% of operating costs”.

“Inevitably, rising transport costs push up the price of everything we buy, including food and clothing.  There is a clear message for companies buying transport – you must pay a sustainable haulage rate”.

“There is also a message for the Chancellor which we will be pressing again at the Treasury next week.  The duty on diesel, already much the highest in Europe, should be reduced in the up-coming Budget; and it is inconceivable that he should go ahead with the 3.02 pence a litre increase planned for August.

The planned rise in fuel duty in January was posponed in the governments Autum statement where it was announced that the 3.02ppl fuel duty increase that was due to take  effect on 1 January 2012 will be deferred to 1 August 2012.

At this time the government are still tight lipped on weather or not the planned duty rise will be postponed again.

Stanford University developing “charge as you go” technologies for EV’s

A research team from Stanford University has designed a highly efficient wireless charging system that uses magnetic fields to transmit large electric currents between metal coils placed several feet apart. The long-term goal of the research project is to develop the technology in to an “all-electric highway” that could wirelessly EV’s as they drive.

This new technology could mean the end of “range anxiety” which has been seen as a major drawback of electronic vehicles since they hit the main stream. According to researchers this technology could “revolutionise” highway systems and pave the way for other applications beyond transportation.

“Our vision is that you’ll be able to drive onto any highway and charge your car,” said Shanhui Fan, an associate professor of electrical engineering. “Large-scale deployment would involve revamping the entire highway system and could even have applications beyond transportation.”

This technology is based on whats called magnetic resonance coupling. Two copper coils are tuned to resonate at the same natural frequency. The coils are placed a few feet apart. One coil is connected to an electric current, which generates a magnetic field that causes the second coil to resonate. This magnetic resonance results in the invisible transfer of electric energy through the air from the first coil to the receiving coil.

The Stanford team has recently filed a patent application for their wireless system. Next they plan to continue testing in the laboratory and continue on to apply the technology to the open road.

Honda set to unveil “Earth Dreams Technology” range at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

Honda NSX Concept hypermiling Honda set to unveil Earth Dreams Technology range at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

Honda set to unveil its latest green car invocations at this year’s 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Its “Earth Dreams Technology” will focus on expanding its already hugely efficient hybrid range to encompass other ways of saving fuel and money for its customers while still keeping the “joy” in motoring.

They will reveal its long-awaited small capacity 1.6 turbo diesel engine. The new power plant will produce and impressive 118bhp while keeping CO2 emissions in the sub 100 mark. Honda claims will be the lightest engine in its class while giving class-leading performance and economy.

These technologies are to be incorporated into its entire car line up as Honda strive to be the world’s number on in fuel economy (FE) in three years.

Together with technologies already gracing its current hybrid models, Honda will be introducing an array of measures to help up the Hypermiling ante. These include lightweight frames, CVT transmissions, two-motor hybrid system and direct-injection technology.

Honda also be using the show for the European debut the NSX Concept. Like the previous version of the now cult car, the concept will showcase a V6 mid-mounted engine however the concept with feature the innovative Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All Wheel DriveTM) hybrid system. The NSX Concept is expected to go on sale within the next three years.
