Gordon Murray’s T.27 steals the show at the RAC Future Car Challenge with an epic 350MPGe

gordon murray mpg future car challenge1 Gordon Murrays T.27 steals the show at the RAC Future Car Challenge with an epic 350MPGeGordon Murray Design’s imaginatively named “T.27″ electric city car has proven its eco credentials once again after an overall win at weekend’s RAC Future Car Challenge.

The 2 seater EV travelled “Hypermiled” 2 up for the full 57.13 miles from Brighton to London using less than 64 pence worth of energy, this is the equivalent of 350mpg or MPGe with CO2 emissions of 37g/km.

Competing against 65 entries from 11 car manufacturers, Gordon’s T.27 scooped the following  awards in the “Most Energy Efficient Small Car (Prototype)”, “Best Overall Pure Electric Vehicle” and “Best Overall Entry – RAC Future Car Challenge Winner” categories.

“The T.27 is a great example of creative thinking, sustainable vehicle design, clever engineering and innovative manufacturing coming together to deliver an extremely efficient electric vehicle”, Gordon Said.

Number 10 considering increasing motorway speed limit to 80MPH

Philip Hammond 300x204 Number 10 considering increasing motorway speed limit to 80MPHHeaded by the transport secretary the  government plans to raise the speed limit to 80mph from 70mph by 2013. According to the misguided politician Philip Hammond “Increasing the motorway speed limit to 80mph would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times. So we will consult later this year on raising the limit to get Britain moving”.

What our fair transport secretary fails to mention is the increased death toll on our roads together with increased fuel bills for motorists already struggling as the government drives us into another debt soaked recession.

Research suggests that over 49% of of UK motorists currently flaunt the speed limit, opting to waste fuel and risk lives in the process. So maybe 90mph will be the new 80? We dread to think.

For the record, we a totally against the proposed plan. The benefits of the slightly increased journey times will be outweighed by both fuel costs and the danger to UK motorists. Travelling at 80MPH opposed to 70MPG could reduce mpg by up to 20%.

Maybe we should have taken a leaf from Spain’s book and reduced the speed limits.

Hypermiling Moses shows us the “10 Commandments of hypermiling”

hypermiling moses Hypermiling Moses shows us the 10 Commandments of hypermiling

As a hypermiler, I get a lot of stick from my so called friends. Well I say friends… since they all abandoned me for scrutinising their driving – all I have is this basket ball with a face painted on it.   So generally its best not to take yourself, or your fuel obsession too seriously. Step in “Hypermiling Moses”. Armed with only 1.0 (one point zero) US gallons of “gas”, J’s right hand man shows us the way to save fuel in this cracking little video from the guys at translogic.

For the die hard Hypermilers out there, I agree – some of the points need a little work but overall its a great take on a subject that has many nodding off.

Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes coasts into the Guiness Book of Records

kia hypermiling world record 300x200 Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes coasts into the Guiness Book of RecordsThe “father” of Hypermiling Wayne Gerdes has yet again proved that Hypermiling reigns supreme. His latest outing behind the wheel the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid returned a staggering 64.55 MPG (US) over a distance of 7,899 miles  across America.

The 48-state hypermiling challenge was completed in 14 days, averaging 564 miles a day and consuming just over 5.5 tanks of fuel. The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car.”

The EPA’s figures for the Optima give a combined MPG of 40, Wayne smashed that with an improvement of  over 61%. I can only image what kind of results he could manage from the Kia Rio that already returns over 88MPG on the combined cycle.

Find out how you too can improve your fuel consumption and save a fortune with our Hypermiling Techniques.

Australian Hypermilers to attempt 2000 miles on a single tank in US road trip

cruze eco Australian Hypermilers to attempt 2000 miles on a single tank in US road trip

A couple of Hypermiling nuts from the “land down under” will be striving for the impossible: 2000 from a single tank in a turbo charged “compact” from Chevy?!

American cars are not known for their efficiency however the US fuel sipper claims to offer 42 (US) MPG, making it the most economical gas petrol car the states has to offer.

The car itself uses a 1.4 turbo charged 4 four banger producing a healthy 138BHP. A six speed gearbox, low rolling resistance tyres and electronically controlled air shutters to reduce drag. It’s an impressive array of fuel saving goodies for a car costing less than $18,000.

The entire journey across the US will total over 9,000 miles, but the happy hypermiling couple will attempt the record tank at some point during their road trip.

The car features a 12.6 gallon tank, meaning they will need to average a staggering 158.7 MPG. It’ll take some epic hypermiling and a minor miracle but at least they have set the bar high. The Taylors already hold 88 world records for their fuel saving antics, we wish them the best of luck and happy Hypermiling!

Pennine train company’s Hypermiling trains save 10m litres of fuel

Pennine hypermiling train Pennine train company’s Hypermiling trains save 10m litres of fuelNorth England Train operator First TransPennine Express has reported that its “Eco-Mode” initiative has saved in excess of 10 million litres of diesel worth £5m since its introduction four years ago.

The Eco-mode “Hypermiling technique” prompts drivers to cut off up to two of their locomotive’s three engines when “coasting” on downhill stretches between Huddersfield and Marsden.

The green thinking train company is using the saved fuel to powers the company’s smaller fleet of two-carriage trains. The initiative has proved to be both a cost cutting and environmental success

It just proves that pretty much anything with an engine can be “Hypermiled”

Black cabs to become green?

green black cabs hypermiling Black cabs to become green?

The black cab cab is an iconic symbol of all things British and with the help from an ambitious trial by the RSA, they could be turning green.

A handful of our fair capital’s “cabbies” are set to have “spring-o-meters” dash board mounted devices that give the driver an audible warning when they brake or  accelerate too sharply. By encouraging hypermiling & smooth driving the The Royal Society for the Encouragement is hoping to cut the equivalent of 200kg of carbon emissions while saving cabbies a whopping £600 in fuel bills.

Passengers will also be able to comment on their journey, guest books will be provided so feedback on their drivers “hypermiling” can be gathered.
