Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes coasts into the Guiness Book of Records

kia hypermiling world record 300x200 Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes coasts into the Guiness Book of RecordsThe “father” of Hypermiling Wayne Gerdes has yet again proved that Hypermiling reigns supreme. His latest outing behind the wheel the 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid returned a staggering 64.55 MPG (US) over a distance of 7,899 miles  across America.

The 48-state hypermiling challenge was completed in 14 days, averaging 564 miles a day and consuming just over 5.5 tanks of fuel. The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car.”

The EPA’s figures for the Optima give a combined MPG of 40, Wayne smashed that with an improvement of  over 61%. I can only image what kind of results he could manage from the Kia Rio that already returns over 88MPG on the combined cycle.

Find out how you too can improve your fuel consumption and save a fortune with our Hypermiling Techniques.

Australian Hypermilers to attempt 2000 miles on a single tank in US road trip

cruze eco Australian Hypermilers to attempt 2000 miles on a single tank in US road trip

A couple of Hypermiling nuts from the “land down under” will be striving for the impossible: 2000 from a single tank in a turbo charged “compact” from Chevy?!

American cars are not known for their efficiency however the US fuel sipper claims to offer 42 (US) MPG, making it the most economical gas petrol car the states has to offer.

The car itself uses a 1.4 turbo charged 4 four banger producing a healthy 138BHP. A six speed gearbox, low rolling resistance tyres and electronically controlled air shutters to reduce drag. It’s an impressive array of fuel saving goodies for a car costing less than $18,000.

The entire journey across the US will total over 9,000 miles, but the happy hypermiling couple will attempt the record tank at some point during their road trip.

The car features a 12.6 gallon tank, meaning they will need to average a staggering 158.7 MPG. It’ll take some epic hypermiling and a minor miracle but at least they have set the bar high. The Taylors already hold 88 world records for their fuel saving antics, we wish them the best of luck and happy Hypermiling!

Pennine train company’s Hypermiling trains save 10m litres of fuel

Pennine hypermiling train Pennine train company’s Hypermiling trains save 10m litres of fuelNorth England Train operator First TransPennine Express has reported that its “Eco-Mode” initiative has saved in excess of 10 million litres of diesel worth £5m since its introduction four years ago.

The Eco-mode “Hypermiling technique” prompts drivers to cut off up to two of their locomotive’s three engines when “coasting” on downhill stretches between Huddersfield and Marsden.

The green thinking train company is using the saved fuel to powers the company’s smaller fleet of two-carriage trains. The initiative has proved to be both a cost cutting and environmental success

It just proves that pretty much anything with an engine can be “Hypermiled”

Black cabs to become green?

green black cabs hypermiling Black cabs to become green?

The black cab cab is an iconic symbol of all things British and with the help from an ambitious trial by the RSA, they could be turning green.

A handful of our fair capital’s “cabbies” are set to have “spring-o-meters” dash board mounted devices that give the driver an audible warning when they brake or  accelerate too sharply. By encouraging hypermiling & smooth driving the The Royal Society for the Encouragement is hoping to cut the equivalent of 200kg of carbon emissions while saving cabbies a whopping £600 in fuel bills.

Passengers will also be able to comment on their journey, guest books will be provided so feedback on their drivers “hypermiling” can be gathered.

One in five motorists abandon 4 wheels as running costs soar

Abandoned car 300x221 One in five motorists abandon 4 wheels as running costs soarA survey by the very nice men breakdown service Green Flag has revialed that soaring running costs have forced a whopping 14 percent of UK motorists to abandon their cars with a further 7 percent opting for for two wheels over four.

Fuel and insurance prices have led the way with many unable to cope with the spiralling costs.

Green flag have also recorded a 40 percent rise in the number of fuel-related call outs in January this year as people try and push more miles from less fuel.

A spokesman for Green Flag said it was called out to more fuel-related incidents as many motorists are still putting the same amount of money in compared to the previous year, but were getting less fuel in exchange.

Sales of 50cc scooters in the UK rose by 11 percent in January 2011, fuelled by motorists trying to deal with record petrol prices by switching to frugal two-wheelers. Many modern scooters are capable of well over 100mpg while costing less than a grand, a sound choice for those living in many urban centres. Riders also benefit from lower parking and road tax costs.

Personally, I’ll stick to Hypermiling. As fun as a scooter may be to ride – they prove too impractical for many commuters.
