Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #5: Your route matters

man reading map 300x215 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #5: Your route mattersThe shortest or quickest route might be the best when you are trying to Hypermile. Hypermiling is all about driving smoothly, when you are stuck in traffic or having to stop start about town you are NOT driving smoothly. Taking a less uninterrupted  and travelled route might take slightly longer but you may see a huge difference in MPG.

When travelling long distances we would recommend using some form of satellite navigation. Sat Nav units have plummeted in price over the years and one can be picked up for less than £50. There are even free sat nav applications for smart phones if you are lucky enough to understand how it works own one! Many of the more expensive units update over the airwaves and will re plan your route if the eye in the sky spots a jam.

If such technology scares you senseless then there are is a vast selection of on-line route planning websites. Google maps is a great example and the street view feature will allow you to become familiar with the route from a 1st person perspective.

Read more for some links to my favourite online route planners and also some suppliers of great value satellite navigation units.

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #4: Slow down

Slow Down1 300x225 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #4: Slow downWe all know that time is money. Like many of our readers, I am short of both.

Many think that making up time by driving faster is a sure fire way of squeezing more into your day, unfortunately this is often a false economy.

The faster you travel, drag and resistance increase. By simply driving slower you can increase your MPG by upto 45%. Experts suggest that a decrease of only 10MPG in speed from 70 to 60MPH can use 20% less fuel, now just image the difference from well above the legal speed limit.

Governments are also taking note of this fact. Recently Spain reduced its motorway speed limits to help save it’s citizens from rising fuel prices.

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #3: Drive without brakes (DWB)

20090903 towing brake 320x240 rb 300x225 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #3: Drive without brakes (DWB)Hypermiling and fuel saving tips have been bouncing around the media of late and this technique is one that’s not considered by most. Driving without brakes isn’t quite what you would think.

Every time you brake you effectively turn fuel into heat & brake dust, wasting the energy you have consumed to get your car up to speed in the first place.

DWB is simply adapting your driving style so you minimize the use of your anchors. In order to achieve this we would suggest you do the following:

  • Keep a good distance away from the car in front of you
  • Choose a route that has the minimum number of junctions and stops

When slowing down, if you opt to simply to reduce or release the accelerator you let engine braking do the work and use little or no fuel while doing so. If you can also maintain as much speed as “safely” possible you also reduce the amount of energy needed to get back up to speed.

This technique is at the heart of every Hypermiler and was also recently recommended on TopGear by the main man JC himself.

This is only a very small part of hypermiling, see our Hypermiling Techniques page for more ways to save money at the pumps. Can you afford not to?

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #2: Maintain your car

IG0019 28 150x150 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #2: Maintain your carMaintaining your car should be both common sense and also part of your motoring routine. A well maintained car will not only give you better efficiency but it will last longer and cost you less in the long run. You don’t need to be a grease fisted mechanic in order to keep your car in tip top condition, however it may be beneficial to enlist the help of a someone with some mechanical experience.

You should:

  • Keep up to date with your services, even if you opt to do them yourself. Servicing ensures that oil, filters and other components are working optimally and your car is safe.
  • Make sure tyre pressures are correct, under inflated tyres can effect your MPG by up to 5 percent. I would suggest in keeping a pressure gauge in the car with you. Try and check weekly if you can.
  • Empty your car of any excess weight & clutter. Maybe even try and rid yourself of that spare tyre! (see Hypermiling Tip #1)
  • Remove roof racks, roof boxes or anything else not needed that increases drag.

Most of the above should be common sense, however I am amazed at how many people I know that just don’t take care of their cars and wonder why they break, cost a fortune to run and ultimately repair. A wise man once said “If you look after your car, it will look after you”.

For next week’s installment we will start on the Hypermiling Techniques that will require a change in your driving style, then you’ll really be saving!!

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #1: Don’t use your car!

peewee 300x240 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #1: Dont use your car!

Peewee Herman, the Ultimate Hypermiler

Each week we will be posting a Hypermiling Tips from our fuel saving and cost cutting Hypermiling Techniques page.

Our first installment is probably the best Hypermiling Tip that I could ever give. Not only does it save you 100% of your precious and increasing expensive fuel but it also keeps you healthier and saves on vehicle maintenance.

Our tip: Don’t use your car

I will be the first to admit that sometimes there are situations that require a car journey for that 2 minute trip, but for a morning paper and milk – it mostly involves sheer laziness. Simply opting to walk, cycle, jog, get a bus or even hitch hike get a lift is the ultimate way of saving fuel.

Those couch potatoes among us may mock, but as they struggle to tie their shoes as they can not see beyond there vast mountain of belly fat – they should take note of the benefits.

Short journeys use much more fuel than longer ones, motor doesn’t have time to get up to temperature also causes increased engine wear. Opting to take the bike (once you have dug it out of the shed) is a sure fire way of burning some calories and saving some cash at the same time.

With fuel prices flirting with the £2 a litre mark, we should all consider when we use our cars – before we priced out of them all together.
