Smithsk71 goes Bangermiling

Postby Smithsk71 » Wed Apr 13, 2016 6:38 pm

So I've always liked the Golf MkIV (yes I know other Mks are better and more sought after) and have been looking around for one of the last ones built in 2004 as a bit of a change from the Big Diesel Bus when I fancy it.

However I spied a 15-year old GTI on Ebay that needed a tyre plus rear pads n discs and took a punt...and won

So for the last week I've been commuting in it quite happily while the Touran rests up in the garage.

My theory is I can have and run two old cars (no depreciation) and do most of the work on the Golf myself while the missus runs the car that is depreciating.

I am trying to spend as little on it as possible until the MOT is passed in June. I will also run it as much as possible before the MOT to see if anything shows up, so far so good. It has 3,000 miles less on it than the Touran despite being twice it's age so that should equal up a bit by then.

Stats so far:
397 miles
Over 1/8th of a tank left - no warning yet.
Fuel computer indicated 38.5mpg - no idea what the manufacturer figure is but I'll aim to beat it!
2008 Touran 1.9 SE - best tank 752 miles
2000 Golf GTI - best tank 475.9 miles
Retired - 2013 Clio dCi 88 - 32 fill-ups (27,631 miles) @ 68.6mpg average

Nice one Steve! Someone at work has a Mk2 GTI (or Mk1 not sure as he doesn't use it daily) but it's probably be worth quite a bit more than yours so not really suitable for bangernomics!!!
'15 Audi A3 Sportback SE CoD S-Tronic - 5+ year average 55+mpg

(Retired) '06 Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi - Best/longest tank: 67.92mpg (+51.6%) / 815.5 miles.

Yes, new discs and pads has probably increased it's value from rock bottom :D
