A run out east this morning to visit the wee boy who fell off some monkey bars, put his top teeth through his bottom lip and finished up in A&E to have it stitched. He was feeling very sorry for himself this morning but I explained it is a rite of passage for all 10 y/o males in our family.

On the way stopped at Sainsburys and filled up with 29 litres for £31. Purely coincidental whole numbers. Confirmed that the mpg reading is 8% on the optimistic side.

What I am doing now is recording the closing range and recorded mileage each day for further checks on the car computer. The closing range before fill up was 50 and after 281 (as expected). A check when I reached home showed 40.5 miles driven a total of 323 (range plus actual) but I will wait until later before formally recording since I have more running to do later.

On May 30th I topped up with 29 litres and immediately after the range gauge showed 281 which included, I assume, the 50 miles range before topping up. Parking up tonight the range showed 152 miles to which needs to be added an actual of 273 miles. So I'm looking at 425 miles from 29 litres. A big assumption is that the total will increase since I have another few days running left. If I top up when the range is down to 50 my actual mpg could be between 62 and 63. The mpg gauge is showing 68.5 so the 8% error on the optimistic side is getting more accurate.

I had two good long runs last week, one to see the wee boy and another to visit the appointed successor in Largs. Weather has been sunny all week but an unseasonal easterly wind is keeping the temperature (and the fish) down.

A surprise run today to pick up the CEO who was visiting the grandweans. The result is that I passed the 383 miles for 60 mpg from a 29 litre fill. And the range gauge shows that I could go another 65 miles. Tomorrow I have to drive to Largs with the Appointed Successors passport and organiser that she left at her old home. Am I brave enough to do the 56 mile run before filling up? Or will I drive 3 miles over the hill to Asda? I'll sleep on it.

So I filled up at a nearby Asda and may have avoided a running out disaster. A senior moment and I missed the Irvine turnoff from the M8. A cross country recovery added 8 miles to my outward trip and that would have taken me very close to the calculated range. But overall 65 mpg for 120 miles - not bad for a Sportage and I might eventually get it over 60 on an overall basis.

Still - I wonder.
