Strava

Postby frv » Fri Jan 31, 2014 9:53 am

My brother-in-law (who does triathalons) told me about this great free App for cycling and running. I also use it for walks as I go for a 30 minute stroll most lunchtimes :) - I average around 4.6mph.
You can track all your runs and rides, set personal records and beat your friends' times. Enter virtual competitions, climb the leaderboards, etc.
I have set up my own segments and see if I can beat previous times on my bike 8-)

Website is here: http://www.strava.com

It uses your phones GPS, available on Apple or Android.

I use something very similar called run keeper. It does much of the same and allows you also set goals for weight loss, distance etc..

Think I posted some routes a little while back.

Looking forward to the summer so I can start biking to work again. Now I'm getting into my 30's I need to fend off the belly!

I started using Stava last year just for cycling. It's excellent. I have a bike gps and upload via the PC after a ride. Logged 75 rides last year for a total of 1739 miles. I'm targetting 2400 miles this year, can't wait until it's light enough at 17:30 that I can have ridden home from work by then. Rides also get uploaded to connect.garmin.com. Altitude and heart-rate is also shown plus the rpm of the cranks turning if I'm on the bike that has that sensor.

Have been logging to the garmin site for a few years so actual mileage for last year was 1891 miles over 96 rides :)

Yes stat junkie here :ugeek:

Nice! I want to do some longer rides this year if my knees hold up
Took my bike in yesterday - pedal/chain/gear :?: was slipping sometimes every third turn - really frustrating. Glad I paid for 12 months cover at 1/2 price when I took my bike in after 3 months for a free check-up. I've got a hybrid now after having a MB for years, bought it last summer along with a bike computer (max speed, ave. speed, time, etc). For christmas I got some LED lights and some mudguards so I can use it whenever :) - already done a few dark rides, seeing as it's still dark when I get home most days....

The bike is working well and I'm loving the App!

It's great to compare how you are doing to other cyclists - I went for a 17 mile ride to Clumber Park, around the lake and back last week and somehow managed to 17th and 28th for a couple of segments out of 171 riders.

Must be the advantage of the hybrid in the rough(ish) conditions as I didn't do anywhere near as well for the rest of the route - middle of the pack! Those top 2 guys must have been bombing it...

I took my daughter on a steady run a couple of days later round the same route ( but a lot wetter! ) and it took nearly 17 minutes instead of just over 8 1/2 :o

I like stats too :ugeek:

Good going! I like to filter it by weight...I'm in the heaviest band...makes me look better...PM me your user ID and I'll 'follow' you frv. According to the stats I've done 1106 miles this year and spent over 3 days on bikes in total :D

Father's Day meant I could do something for myself today so I went for an even longer ride. Managed 26.9 miles in 1hr 46 :)
Some on the road and some on rough tracks again.

You're doing way more than me Steve, I haven't even done 200 miles this year
