My old Honda had 6 gears and could cruise in 6th at 30 on the flat without labouring the engine.
My new auto A3 has 7 gears and this seems plenty!
I saw an advert for a Jeep with 9 gears recently, wow!

They do, Golfs are available with 7 speed DSG 'boxes now.
That said, our 12 plate Golf Bluemotion is only 5-speed but has a fuel saving long-ratio gearbox. At 30mph the car isn't really happy in anything above third (and doing well under 2000 RPM). This means that 5th is a very long gear which makes the car very fuel efficient on the motorway but it's not so poorly geared that you miss 6th.
I believe trucks typically have 16 gears or maybe even more. I guess it depends very much on how wide your power band is and how heavy your vehicle (or load) is.
Provided you can get to the top of your power band and when you select your next gear you haven't dropped out of the bottom of your power band then your gearbox is effectively providing everything you need.
