Tyre wear feedback

Need new tyres soon on the bus so I thought I'd post some wear figures here in case any use.

Current tyres on the Touran 1.9 tdi are Goodyear Efficient Grip 205/55/16/91V - all four put on November 2012.

Fronts have 3mm left 25000 miles later, rears have 5mm.

Previously we've had Pirellis on which were good for 20k on the front and 40k on the back.

Car is used on mainly shortish journeys and not driven sportily. Even the missus is trying to hypermile a bit these days - we've spent over £2500 on diesel so far in 2014. Will probably get the same tyres again. They are actually cheaper right now from Blackcircles than they were last time.

Now to the Clio dCI. That has Michelin Energy Saver 195/50/16/88V fitted from the factory. Ironically these appear to be more expensive than the tyres for the bus!
It is now at 25594 miles and in fact the wear is 5mm all round front and rear - which surprised me - would expect to see higher wear on fronts. Must be the hypermiling driving style with no heavy braking. The only time the tyres are pushed a bit is when trying to carry momentum on roundabouts when it's safe. If tyres start at about 8mm these could be good for almost 40k!!

I keep meaning to get some data on my tyre wear!

Original fronts (Bridgestone) lasted around 20k (2 years 4 months) non-hypermiling. Changed to Avon ZV3.

Original rears (Bridgestone) lasted around 28k (3 years 6 months) of which about 12 months was hypermiling (i'll have to check my records for make)

Avon's lasted 14k (poor, 2 years) on front changed to Michelin Energy Saver.

After 26k+ miles the Michelin Energy Savers were rotated to the rear and new Goodyear Efficient Grip put on front.

The Michelin Energy Savers lasted another 6k so did over 32k miles (4 years 2 months ) and were replaced last month with Avon ZV5's. I haven't bothered going for a premium tyre on the rear this time as I may actually be swapping my car in the next year or two so unlikely I'd reap the benefit. The Avon's have decent grip and are only a notch down from the Goodyears for LRR.

Looks like 25k is pretty acceptable for fronts with a heavy diesel engine then.
14k most definitely not!

I think I'll get either the Goodyears or the Michelin's - whatever is cheapest at the time. Think they have the same ratings.

Need new pads all-round on the Touran imminently too - going to get expensive! 65k not bad though.

If you want to choose tyres based purely on how long they last, consider Continentals.

I find that Continental tyres are a fairly hard compound and seem to last an awful lot longer than other makes. The softest tyres I've had on one of our cards were Yokohama's but these were NOT for hypermiling and subject to some VERY hard use.

I've also found that Pirelli seem to wear out reasonably quickly but were comparable to Michellin which lasted reasonably well. Bridgestones seem to wear well but like I say, Continental seem to be the kings at being fitted and then seeming to last and last.
