Hypermiling and Engine rpm ?

There's still time for a record tank. I actually got my best result last year in October but that may have been due to me improving my hypermiling techniques. The temperature being higher definitely helps. Below 7°C I get loooooong engine warm up times and resort to grill blocking. I'm getting a new bigger garage with an insulated door later this year but it may not be ready before the colder weather sets in.

What is your optimum speed? I've found my optimum speed when not on the highway is about 42 MPH. I bring the car up to about 48 where my overdrive kicks in and then reduce to 42. My tach reads about 1300 RPM's. On the highway, I stay at 72 MPH. That's 2300 RPM's. I figure a piston engined airplane optimum cruise speed is at 2300 RPM's. I'll do the same. The V6 Accord should get 19 and 29 MPG. I am achieving 26 and 34. I've found myself going an extra 100 miles per tank of gas! Try it, it works!

I would think 72mph is too fast. It may be closer to the optimum brake specific fuel consumption but the drag effect would be greater, better to go slower. I reckon 45 - 50 is best speed in my car. My max. speed is 60 on highway (motorway).
