TYRES - New EU tyre labelling system

Hello everyone,

I was just doing a bit of research as my rear tyres need replacing and I thought I'd share some useful info I found.

I was interested to see that there is a 7.5% difference between ratings A and G - this is significant.

Also, make sure you check the rating of new tyres and don't just buy them based on marketing spiel, it turns out that many of the fuel saving, energy and eco tyres have poor efficiency ratings (E,F,G) the same as others that aren't being marketed as eco.

The best I've found for my saxo are Yokohama BluEarth AE01 145/70/13 (nice and skinny) they are C rated and are made from 80% recycled materials.

Annoyingly I can't find any info on the max sidewall pressure.

I've Michelin Energy Savers on front and Bridgestone on the rears of FR-V and Conti Eco Contact on front of what is now my daughter's Jazz S. Don't know what's on OH's Jazz Si, probably not Eco tyres but they do grip well!

The QQ is an SUV so they don't do any "eco" tyres for it. Gutted!

I looked into tyres when I first heard about the new labelling system.

The new Michelin tyres are 'Energy Saver +' (the old ones don't have the +). They are rated B/A (but note that the rating differs by tyre size. In my own tyre size, the new ones are rated C/A, and the old ones are rated E/A. Amazing to think that our current Energy Savers are now only rated E out of A-G for rolling resistance!!).

However a bunch of A/A tyres from other manufacturers are also been announced (The rating will differ by tyre size - the A/A is the rating for their best tyre). Unlike Michelin to fall behind on rolling resistance.

Of course the ASR system in a lot of modern cars likes the tyres to have the same tread design + wear left&right (and preferably also back&front).
