Anyone done any engine mods?

Postby Fallguy » Sat Dec 05, 2009 10:06 pm

Just curious whether anyone has tried any mods to their engines? Thinking engine remaps, induction kits, updated injectors/carbs, etc?

Just curious whether there are any efficiency gains to be had.

Completely standard here.

Superchips though offer an MPG increase or money-back guarantee on Superchips/Bluefins for turbo-diesel cars.
Cheers.
Ian.

I'm standard too - wouldn't know where to start

I have done the boy racer thing and that's included such mods as putting a superchip and Performance Actuator in my RS Turbo Fiesta (170BHP) and also stripping cars out to make them faster. As for MPG - the cars I owned at that time had only one thing in mind and that came at a cost of 10-20MPG.

I contemplated a little while ago getting a 106 1.5 and "modding" it in a way that would improve its MPG i.e weight saving, some aero mods and low rolling resistance tyres however it never worked out.

I would be tempted to get some low rolling resistance tyres but that would depend on how much they cost against the gains I would expect. I also understand that superchips improve performance and MPG on TD cars but the last thing I want to do to my tired old Golf is shove another 30BHP and a bag load of torque at the ageing motor.

I don'y often use the radio so maybe I should put the aerial down

Thanks for the info, according to Superchips website my Clio could gain a whopping 5 bhp. No mention of improved fuel efficiency for petrols though.

Like Karl I'm not sure I would be keen to put any extra stress on an old engine, and in my case the gearbox either.

I am tempted to get a diagnostics computer though - I'm convinced the turbo on the wifes Scenic isn't working right (or possibly at all) and learning about computers in cars would combine 2 hobbies! :)

Any recommendations for a diagnostic computer (or software and adaptor)?

I'm interested in the Scanguage II but it just seems too pricey. Still tempted though

Hmm,
Scanguage looks interesting but probably wouldn't work on the Clio - maybe on the Scenic.

There seem to be some good open source apps out there for diagnostics with OBD and OBD II ported cars.
