UK supermarket Morrisons has teamed up 34 leading high street retailers to launch the UK’s first-ever Fuel Saver scheme to help shoppers reduce their motoring fuel bills.

The scheme involves shoppers at Morrisons buying gift cards that can be used to make purchases in participating retail outlets. For every £10 worth of vouchers purchased, the shopper will receive a voucher for 1p off a litre of fuel.

It might not sound like a lot but if you are buying a new laptop or TV from PC World / Currys for £500 you’ll receive a voucher for 50p off a litre at a  Morrisons forecourt. This could save a over £30 for a typical full-up! The voucher can only be redeemed for the first 100 litres of a full up however the saving is only limited by the price of fuel, meaning in you could get a free tank of fuel if you bought enough vouchers.

Other supermarkets have been using the money off fuel vouchers to drive sales however this is scheme is very different to the product targeted deals that have been seen at retailers such as Tesco. With Christmas on the horizon, this could make that costly purchase for this years “must have” gadget that bit more bearable!

Commercial director of Morrisons, Richard Hodgson said: “We know that the cost of filling the family car is a real worry for our families but using Fuel Saver for purchases can lead to very large savings. This new scheme will mean that customers need never pay the full price for petrol again.”
