Future Prius, faster and greener? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

The original green car, the Toyota Prius, is to become bigger and sportier yet still improve its emissions figure, Toyota claims.

“It will be cleaner, with CO2 emissions below 100g/km,” Toyota GM managing director, Miguel Fonseca speaking at the Paris Motor Show.

“We could have gone lower, but instead we have chosen to give the Prius better performance.”

The new edition of the famous hybrid car will be on show at the Detroit Motor Show in January and will feature a bigger engine, quicker acceleration and a top speed above 100mph, The Times reports.

An upgrade from 1.5 litre engine to a 1.8 litres will improve the Prius’ performance. Other reported changes include a top speed of 120mph up from 106mph and a few inches added to the width and length. Toyota decided to stick with a petrol hybrid engine, unlike some rivals who have opted to experiment with diesel hybrids. Despite the better fuel efficiency of diesel engines, Toyota believe the high price of diesel, makes a petrol engine a better choice.

UK government is trialling Intelligent Speed Adaptation PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

Intelligent Speed AdaptationThe UK government is trialling technology that can control the speed of our cars. The system, known as Intelligent Speed Adaptation can be fitted to a car to monitor the speed of the vehicle. It uses Sat-Nav technology and a pre-programmed computer containing details of the speed limits on each road to determine when a car is breaking the legal maximum speed.

Two types of the technology could be used, a Mandatory or Non-Overridable ISA, which can be linked to the engine or brakes to enforce the speed limit or a Voluntary ISA which would issue a warning to the motorist to slow down.

ISA could be adapted to adjust driving speed according to the weather, traffic and road conditions too, to improve safety, the Department for Transport (DfT) claim.

Trails have taken place in Leeds and Leicestershire and while implementation ISA is likely to be voluntary, the DfT are looking at ways to make the technology available to motorists. A DfT poll showed support for the technology, with 56 per cent of motorists supporting the idea.

Use of such a system could not only protect motorists from speeding fines and prevent accidents but could also prevent the unnecessary waste of fuel. Over-revving of our engines is a common way to waste fuel, ISA could also be programmed to help motorists drive in the most fuel-efficient way, reducing CO2 emissions.

Toyota still considering Prius sub-brand PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

We've been hearing rumblings of more models coming from Toyota that would carry the Prius badge for the last few months. While the Prius in five door hatchback style that we all know and love will definitely carry on, even after it is completely redone next year, there are likely to be other hybrid vehicles from the automaker that could slot both above and below the current Prius in size and price. Remember that Toyota showed off its 1/x (pronounced 1/xth) concept that used innovative packaging and new materials to punch a Prius-sized hole in the wind with less than a thousand pounds of vehicle. A larger hybrid is also a possibility, though we must wonder what that could mean to future hybrid variants of the popular Camry line.

Another intriguing option that we first heard of today are Prius-branded dealerships. Toyota has already tested the waters by introducing the Scion brand in the States as separate from its parent. A hybrid-only dealership could lend that extra bit of green street-cred to the automaker that already leads the race in hybrid development.

A new enemy for 4x4 owners PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

range rover Attacked by eco-activists and punished by the tax-man, now the owners of the much-derided 4x4 have a new enemy – thieves who slip underneath their vehicle’s chassis and saw off its catalytic converter.

Police believe thousands of the exhaust parts have been stolen from 4x4s in the past six months by criminal gangs that want the precious metals inside. The converters – which are designed to reduce the toxic emissions from a car’s exhaust – contain platinum, palladium and rhodium. The prices of those metals have soared in the past two years.

The models most targeted include the Mitsubishi L200, BMW X5 and Ford Ranger. Many Mitsubishi Shoguns and Land Rover Discoveries have also been hit. Although the car can be driven to a garage for repair, a loud rattle will be heard underneath the vehicle, similar to the sound of a broken exhaust. The converter costs up to £2,000 to replace.

Peter Tyrell, a crime prevention officer for Lincolnshire police, said: “Four-by-fours are particularly popular with these criminals because they have a high clearance off the ground.

“These people can get under the chassis and saw off the converter in less than three minutes.”

The gangs have also targeted car showrooms. Iain Crighton, a Mitsubishi dealer in Peterborough, said: “We were hit badly. Seven of our 4x4s and two other cars were done in one night.”

The thieves, who sell the catalytic converters on to metal traders for between £100 and £200, are the first stage of an international trade in scrap metal that takes the stolen car parts to India, China and eastern Europe to be recycled and sold on.

Northamptonshire police said some thieves are quite brazen: “They are known to strike in broad daylight in busy areas. In some cases they have been seen using mechanical dollies to slide under vehicles more easily.”

PHEV Plug In Prius brought forward PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Sunday, 31 August 2008 18:08

PHEV plugin Toyota PriusToyota President, Katsuaki Watanabe this week announced that the start of fleet testing for plug-in capable Priuses had been moved up by a year. At this year's Detroit Auto Show, Watanabe announced that several hundred Priuses with the ability to be plugged in would be delivered to government and commercial fleets in 2010 for field testing. That schedule has been adjusted so that the PHEVs would now be introduced in early 2009 with several hundred on the road by the end of the year. Over on the Toyota Open Road Blog, communications VP Irv Miller makes it clear though that no timetable has been set for retail sales of these cars and that it won't happen until Toyota is well and truly confident that the lithium ion batteries are safe, reliable and affordable. He also calls out a Palo Alto, CA Toyota dealer for beginning to take deposits on the cars. While applauding the dealership's initiative he stresses that no one knows when a PHEV Prius will actually be available to the public, including Toyota's dealer network.

The Trident Iceni "The 70MPG supercar" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Monday, 25 August 2008 21:29

Trident IceniA British carmaker has built a storming new 200mph+ supercar which can return nearly 70mpg – the new Trident Iceni. The Trident Iceni is a new supercar which uses a 6.6-litre V8 turbodiesel engine which produces 550bhp and a massive 950lb/ft of torque – more than twice the pull of a 7-litre Corvette Z06.

This means the Trident Iceni can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds – as quick as a Ferrari F40 – and hit a top speed of more than 200mph.

The Trident Iceni achieves this remarkable power and mpg figure thanks to what the company calls “torque multiplication”.Trident says this technology is “available now, requires no further research and development and can make an immediate difference to the amount of emissions diesel vehicles produce”.

The Trident Iceni was tested at the Millbrook Proving Ground and at a constant speed of 70mph the team recorded an average mpg figure of 68.9. The Trident recorded an astonishing 108mpg when testing at 30mph city driving, claiming the new Iceni can travel 2,000 miles on a single tank of diesel before refuelling. The chassis is made from stainless steel and is guaranteed against corrosion for 100 years – meaning this supercar will never rust.

The new Trident Iceni is nearly production ready, and prices will start from £75,000 when it goes on sale.

Fiat 500 HYBRID "in the works" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Wednesday, 20 August 2008 20:22

With its compact body and highly efficient range of gasoline and diesel engines, there aren't a lot of cars on the road that return better fuel economy and lower emissions than the Fiat 500. But if the latest reports are to be believed, Fiat isn't about to rest on its green laurels.

According to emerging reports, a hybrid version of the Fiat 500 is in the works. The gas/electric retro mini would start off with Fiat's 900cc two-cylinder engine, hooked up to a battery pack and backed up by a start-stop ignition system and a dual-clutch transmission. The idea of an environmentally-friendly 500 was previewed by the Fiat 500 Aria concept (pictured above) shown earlier this year at the Geneva show, while the 500 hybrid would reportedly be unveiled, oddly, at next year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. The combination of green credentials would surely increase the 500's economy to industry-leading levels, and help the entire Fiat Group come in below impending European emissions standards.

Blue Lion PeugeotContinuing the recent European theme of "blue is the new green", Peugeot is adding Blue Lion editions to many of its most popular models. Like VW's BlueMotion models, the Blue Lion editions are tuned to minimize emissions of carbon dioxide. To qualify for the Blue Lion branding models have to emit less than 130 g/km of CO2, be 95 percent recyclable at end of life and be built in a factory that is ISO 14001 certified. Peugeot claims to have fifty models of its cars right now that meet the 130 g/km of CO2 standard although its not clear how many of them will meet the other criteria for Blue Lion certification.

Prius gets ethanol makeover PDF Print E-mail

Few green cars have had the impact of the Toyota Prius - and now the flagship green vehicle is ready to break down more boundaries.

With its super ultra low emissions the Prius has long been a favourite among environmentalists and has been endorsed by numerous celebrities. However, hybrid cars are not quite the finished article as far as producing truly green vehicles is concerned - due to their reliance on petroleum or diesel alongside electricity. To become truly green, renewable resources need to be used - and following the success of many third-party companies converting the Prius into a plug-in hybrid, this Toyota model may soon be equipped with various fuelling systems.

Its first eco-upgrade will be to offer E85 conversions - that is a vehicle that runs on 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent regular fuel. A Dutch firm named Green Fuel Systems has created a conversion kit that costs just €549.

With Toyota already having outlined plans for solar panels to be incorporated into future Prius designs, the car could soon have some dazzling green credentials - the ability to run on batteries, with solar-powered air conditioning, and the option to switch between regular petrol and ethanol.

Nissan Releases details on its OWN Hybrid and EV PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 19:27

Nissan has been selling a hybrid version of its Altima sedan in select U.S. states for the last two years that uses a licensed version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. At the same time it's been working on its own hybrid and all-electric powertrains, and yesterday it unveiled two prototypes that show us exactly what it will be replacing those Prius parts with.

The first is a new hybrid system that will debut on a rear-wheel-drive Infiniti model, most likely the G. It employs a parallel hybrid system with one electric motor and two clutches that allows the gas engine and electric motor to power the vehicle at the same time. Nothing fancy there, but Nissan's new hybrid will be one of the first to use lithium-ion rather than nickel-metal hydride batteries. The smaller, more efficient batteries were developed by a joint-venture company between Nissan and NEC called Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC).

Meanwhile, those same li-ion batteries are also being tested in an all-electric vehicle. Though currently installed in a JDM Nissan Cube, the system will eventually be put in all-new model with unique styling and be on the Japanese market by 2010 and sold globally by 2012. It uses a new 80kW motor and inverter and packs all the batteries beneath its floor.
