Another £30 of diesel has been used by my 306 and yet again I have proved that Hypermiling DOES work. This fill has seen my 306 travel an extra 70 miles over what I would have expected before Hypermiling with an impress figure of 59MPG - just 1MPG from my 60MPH target. Thats not quite Prius figures but for an old diesel engine thats done 160K miles thats pretty good. However... thats not quite as impressive as my Hypermiling attempt in a 2002 BMW 320D, for such a large car that produces 150BHP I was utterly shocked to achieve an amazing 85.1MPG for a journey to and from the pub on Friday. With that kind of return from a car that costs less than £5,000 is there really any need for a Petrol Hybrid?? Maybe question will have to wait until I have a chance to try one. |

While on our lunch my driver commonly known as "Crispaay" decided that his BMW 320d getting a little low on fuel, usually a quick drop into the local Shell garage puts that right. We thought we might have been in for a short wait but we were amazed to see no que at all! For that matter we were even more amazed to see even less pumps open that people on the forecourt! Shell's own high octain fuel was in plentiful supply but unleaded and diesel were completely sold out. Panic buying and the lack of deliveries had ensured that most customers were simply after a ginsters pastry. Im lucky that I still have a quarter of a tank still in the 306 and using my new found love for hypermiling that should see me to well after all is back to normal. In further news I have now started lift sharing with a work friend. I have estimated that this will save me in the region of £20 per month in fuel and I will also get my very own driver for two weeks of the month. It wont help my MPG but thats a fair saving for both of us and one less car on the road. |

Its time again to fill the 306 and this time I have managed to cover a whopping 282 miles on only 23 Litres of Diesel - that works out to 56MPG. That might not seem amazing to many newer dieses but before I started Hypermiling I was doing well to get 43MPG for the same trips. That includes a few trips with half a tonne of slabs in the boot which would have dropped my MPG considerably. Overall using Hypermiling Techniques has been an enjoyable experience and if anything its turned into a bit of a sport to work out ways to improve and also hit a personal best. Ive not got any more lugging about to do with it so I am aiming for the elusive 60MPG with my next £30 fill. |

After my amazing 40% increase in MPG I was a bit worried that my 58MPG was a fluke or a mis calculation on my part. Having fulled up with another 30 pounds out the white stuff (about 23 Litres) I am already hitting nearly 200 miles without the fuel waring light showing. That works out at just over 40 MPG and I still have quite a few miles left to bring that figure up. I have changed my driving style slightly by reducing my speed down to about 45MPH and further practice has increase my coasting distances into junctions. This should hopefully pull my MPG up even further, I would like to break the 60MPG before the end of the month. I will report my final MPG figure next week when I run out of juice. |

The Journey After quite a lot of research I decided upon my hypermiling technique and filled up with 25 litres of Esso's finest. I would usually expect to see about 42 MPG or 230 miles from 25 litres so any improvement from my initial trial would be a bonus. Especially considering the roads I was to travel. About 95% of my journeys are to and from work. The journey consists of mostly short back roads with a few instances of single track, not ideal for any kind of efficient driving. If the roads were safer I would consider biking but many of the roads have fast blind bends that I would not feel safe travelling on. The Technique Due to the start stop nature the road to work I decided on the burn and coast technique. Just to cover safety concerns I have opted for an "in gear" coast with the engine running. This technique means I need to read the road ahead as much as I can and work out the coasting distanced needed to use the least amount of burn and get the most from my coast (hey that rhymes!). I have worked out my coast points using markers such as kinks in the road and trees. Upon reaching my marker I simply release the throttle and coast as far as I can... safely. The end of my coast is usually a junction, so If anything I am reaching the junctions at a lower speed meaning I have more time to check for traffic and read the road. I worked out the burning technique to be used by thinking about the characteristics of the diesel engine in my 306. The turbo kicks in at about 2k revs at this point it is also producing its maxium torque. By accelerating at about half throttle between 2k and 3k revs means that not only I reach my required speed (45mph) quickly but also without burning too much fuel. The Results For my first try I expected in the region of a 10% increase, meaning I would expect about 250miles from the tank. At present my trip computer is showing 314 miles with the low fuel light on and the guage is showing very close to empty. I still have to travel to work on Tuesday to fill up again as the diesel prices are lower in that area. This would mean I would expect 324 miles from the 25 litres I originally put in the tank. Using the Hypermiler.co.uk MPG calculator that means I have achieved 58.9 MPG. Thats just over a 40% increase in efficiency with a very minimal increase in the time it takes me to get to work. Thats quite a gain from a very simple driving technique that is not only safe but is also easy to adapt to pretty much any car. |

Welcome to my Hypermiling Blog. Read below my experiences with my old faithful 1998 Peugeot 306 Turbo Diesel and my efforts at Hypermiling. Firstly, heres some information regarding my 306 Turbo Diesel Peugeot XUD9TE 1.9 litre (1905 cc) 8 valve turbocharged diesel engine delivering 92bhp (67kW) mated to a 5 Speed Manual Transmission (BE3/5). 5 Door diablo red body with 14inch 306 Alloy wheels (185/60/14). A pretty much standard car apart from the stereo. In standard form my 306 should return approximatly 42.8MPG. Without using any hypermiling techniques I found this to be about right. I will post as often as I can, updating you with my current MPG and my experiences as I try out all manner of Hypermiling Techniques. Remember to check out the Hypermiling Techniques page for more information on the techniques I am using. |
