Clarkson rips into new 64.2mpg Honda Insight PDF Print E-mail

 Honda Insight

In Clarksons latest rant in the Times Online, he sets his sights on the new 64.2mpg Honda Insight. For those who are fans of Honda' flag ship Hybrid it doesnt bode well. Mr Clarkson reports "It’s terrible. Biblically terrible. Possibly the worst new car money can buy. It’s the first car I’ve ever considered crashing into a tree, on purpose, so I didn’t have to drive it any more."

In hard times for all car manufactures quotes like this will not be sitting well when coming from a highly respected motoring journalist. I just wonder if the new Prius will get such a warm welcome from Jezza.

Cash for Clunker program funds a pair of Nissan GT-Rs PDF Print E-mail

Nissan GT-R

When the UK government decided to introduce the "Cash for Clunkers program" it was aimed at not only kick starting plummeting new car sales but also to help us into todays new eco friendly and "green" offerings from manufactures. According to Autotrader, two of the first new vehicles purchased under the UK's new scrapping scheme were Nissan GT-Rs. Not quite the eco-friendly car of choice. Most other countries have written in legislation to ensure the program ensures people are opting for a more fuel efficent model rather than help funding a £50,000 pound supercar!

Worlds Smallest Car 70 MPG

Behold the World's Smallest Street-Legal Ca, Standing just 39 inches tall and 26 inches wide, The ridiculously tiny vehicle owes its new-found fame to Perry Watkins, 47 from the UK. The mini automobile was adapted from a Postman Pat car, Perry then added a steel frame to the fiberglass shell and propped it all up with the chassis from a quad. The small-displacement engine reportedly returns 70 miles per gallon and manages to push the diminutive flame-painted flyer to a top speed of 40 miles per hour. It seems like a high price to pay for such economy but we very much doubt it was built with MPG in mind!

New Electric bike offers more "boost" per buck PDF Print E-mail

a2b electric bike

UK Cyclists could soon be "powering" past traffic on the fastest electric bicycle to date which features a 'boost' button. From next month, the new electric bike which can reach speeds of 20mph is expected to be ridden by hundreds of cyclists on their way to work. The rather tasty creation will cover 20 Miles before needing a recharge (taking 5 hours) with an extra battery pack offering an additional 20 miles.

The new creation will sell for £2,000 and comes in two models - one for the lazy commuter who prefers not to pedal at all and another which gives an added motorised boost as the rider pedals. With more torque and greater acceleration than any other electric bicycle,  the creators of the A2B Metro and the A2B Hybrid believe the machines can convert commuters to a "greener" mode of transport.

1,445.7 miles on a tank: The godfather of Hypermiling and the new Ford Fusion Hybrid PDF Print E-mail

Ford Fusion Hybrid Hypermiling

The "God father" of Hypermiling Wayne Gerdes joined NASCAR driver Carl Edwards and a team of Ford engineers in pushing a bone-stock 2010 Fusion Hybrid to 81.5 MPG (US) - effectively doubling the car’s claimed range of 700 miles - during a three-day hypermiling publicity stunt dubbed “The 1,000 Mile Challenge.” They almost broke a hypermiling distance record set in 2002.

Even the boffins at Ford were doubtful the Fusion would pass 1,000 mies on a tank, it goes to show that Hypermiling Techniques really do work.

Sales of Eco Cars account for HALF of all UK Car sales PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Sunday, 10 May 2009 11:58

Polo Blue MotionSales of eco-friendly cars soared to more than half of all new purchases so far this year. But overall sales fell again in April for the 11th consecutive month. It was the worst performance for the month since 1991. A total of 133,475 vehicles were registered in April 2009, down 24 per cent compared with the same period last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.

Both the government and dealerships are pinning their hopes on the Government's 'cash for bangers' car scrapping scheme, which will start on May 18. The scheme involves owners of ten-year-old cars getting £2,000 - half from the Government, half from the car industry - when they trade in their old vehicle and buy a brand-new model.

April Fuels Day PDF Print E-mail

Fuel Duty RiseMotorists face paying an extra £1 for a tank of petrol as higher fuel duty kicks in today. Unleaded petrol is to go up by 2.12p a litre including VAT. That will send average pump prices towards 95p a litre the highest since November. The rise in Fuel Duty was due to come into force in October last year, but thanks to the high crude oil prices, the Treasury backed down and delayed to increase petrol prices at the pumps.

Oil firms 'still not passing on full saving to motorists' PDF Print E-mail

Fuel PumpThe latest Daily Mail Cost of Living Index reveals prices paid at the pumps are lagging behind the 55 per cent fall in the value of crude oil. Oil giants are artificially inflating the cost of living for millions, figures suggest.

The European Commission has launched an inquiry, following an official complaint from the European umbrella organisation for motoring groups, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile.Brent crude is currently trading at $44.55 a barrel, down from $100.3 in March last year - which should mean significantly lower prices across the economy. This means motorists filling up with the average 85 litres over a month are missing out on £12.91 monthly saving - or just under £155 a year.

UK new car CO2 emissions plummet faster than ever PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

Exhaust GasesThe UK saw the biggest drop ever in CO2 emissions from new vehicles sold in 2008, with a year over year reduction of 4.2 percent. Wtih a fleetwide average of just 158 g/km, cars amount to just 11.5 percent of total UK carbon dioxide emissions. The combination of rapid escalation in fuel prices in 2008 and congestion charges in cities like London undoubtedly pushed many car buyers to some of the low emissions specials like the VW Polo BlueMotion, Smart ForTwo CDi and Ford Fiesta ecoNetic.

Government supporting £2,500 handout to scrap your old car PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl

20 Pound notes

Motorists are to be offered up to £2,500 in taxpayer-funded handouts for trading their old car in for a newer model. Ministers are backing the idea of a 'cash-for-scrap' bounty under plans to kickstart the motor industry with UK taxpayers money. The sceme would offer up to £2,500 for cars over 9 years old.

A scheme pioneered in Germany has led to a 21 per cent rise in new vehicle sales in February. By contrast, the number sold here fell by more than 21 per cent last month, the tenth monthly drop in a row.

This may lead to more fuel efficient cars on the road but it's just another scheme supporting the massivly ineffiecient car industry with our money. I am not sold on the idea one bit! More Details on our forum.

Radio HypermilingI've just come off a radio interview with the lovely Annie Othen from BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. Its seems that in light of the current economic "crisis" money saving tips like Hypermiling are again in the public eye. Hopefully I got across that every little bit counts when driving and just the smallest things like turning off your aircon and inflating your tyres to the correct pressure can add up to make a huge difference. Remember to check out our Hypermiling techniques page for a run down on all you need to know to start saving fuel and your hard earned pennies.

I would also like to say a big thank you to the team at BBC Coventry and Warwickshire for the air time!

Government considering dropping rural speed limit to 50MPH PDF Print E-mail

50MPH sign

The UK Government is considering cutting speed limits on most rural single-carriageway roads from 60mph to 50mph. Ministers believe the potentially unpopular move may be needed to cut the number of deaths among motorists and pedestrians. Currently the speed limit on almost all single carriageway roads outside of towns is set at 60mph, except for at accident blackspots. However, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick is said to have been struck by figures showing that these parts of the network were more prone to crashes.

Not only will this  help reduce accidents it will also help increadse MPG. A drop of 10MPH can increase your fuel efficency by upto 25%.

Toyota IQ

This is iQ - Toyota's official UK blog for the newly-launched iQ city car have embarked on a hypermiling road trip to see if they can beat the car's official 65.7mpg. En route, and on a single tank of fuel, they’ll attempt to take in up to 18 cities. They'll be using some Hypermiling techniques but with the priority being on safety. See the official Toyota IQ Blog for more information and updates. Good luck Guys.

UPDATE 1:  Its not looking too good for the IQ boys as the second to last segment on the fuel gauge just disappeared. "Our chances of making 500 miles are starting to look slim"

UPDATE 2:  THEY DID IT!! They managed  504.2 miles on the iQ's tiny tank. That works out at a mammoth 72mpg!! Check out their blog for a full run down on the event and how they progressed. With the huge amount of press coverage the event received - it did a lot for Toyota's new supermini and also helped raise the profile of Hypermiling in the UK.

Crashing car prices are leaving thousands in 'negative equity' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Tuesday, 06 January 2009 21:11

negative equityExperts have warned that plunging car prices are leaving thousands of motorists in 'negative equity' on their vehicle loans. Many predicted future values on which car finance deals are based are well above what the vehicle is now worth leaving many motorists who opted for PCP finance having to hand back their cars .Its estimated that the total shortfall between what is owed on car loans and the value of the vehicles could be as much as £272million.

This news comes as a blow to UK motorists who are already gripped by the recession, falling house prices and job security. It's never been such a good time to start Hypermiling.

The Big FreezeThe UK is set for Big Chill in the New Year with weathermen warning that temperatures could plunge as low as minus 13C. Motorists will need to be extra careful in the coming weeks as overnight temperatures plunge to as low as minus 6C. At least two weeks of widespread frosts are forecast as a cold front from Siberia takes hold.

If the last cold front we experienced is anything to go by motorists will see a massive drop in MPG and grip! See our busy Hypermiling forum for more experiences with the cold weather from our forum members.

Opec to slashing oil output to drive prices back up PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:19

Oil pump OpecJust when both petrol and diesel prices both dropped below the magic £1 mark motorists could see the cost of their petrol and gas soar again after the world's oil producers (Opec) announced that they are to dramatically slash production. Oil cartel Opec says it is cutting 2.2 million barrels a day from its output - the largest ever at one time - to stem crude prices that have plummeted over 70 per cent from summer highs of nearly $150. Consumer groups have warned that the cut could have a dramatic impact on customers here in the UK with firms using Opec's decision as an excuse not to cut their prices.

The price of fuel is at an all time low this year with the price of diesel costing 34p less a litre from its July high.

Fuel duty to rise by 5p / Litre as “Gordon’s lot” helps revive the economy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Karl
Tuesday, 25 November 2008 22:17

Gordon Brown is a twatJust when UK Motorists thought their fuel bills were at last at a stable and sensible level we are slapped in the face with a 'stealth tax' rise of 5p a litre in fuel duty. The first 2p-a-litre hike kicks in on Monday December 1 as Chancellor Darling ends a freeze on duty and increases the flat-rate tax from 50.35p to 52.35p a litre.

Thats not the end of the bad news... as well as the unfrozen 2p a litre, motorists face a further 1.84p-a-litre duty from April 1 200... thanks Gordon!! Apparently these increases will not effect motorists due to the recent fall in fuel and oil prices.

Edmund King, AA president, said: 'The Chancellor is giving with one hand and taking away even more with the other. We would have to agree with that.
