Panic buying as fuel shortages loom

Motorists around the UK have started to panic buy fuel yesterday as the boys at number 10 warned to prepare for fuel shortages in the wake of industrial action by tanker drivers.

The strike is expected to start in around ten days has been timed to cause maximum disruption to motorists over the Easter holidays.

Officials have urged drivers not to hoard petrol, but said they should take ‘prudent’ steps to ensure they have a full tank over the next week or so. Motoring groups have not echo’ed the governments stance and have urged motorists not to change their fuel buying habits in the run up to the strikes.

Fuel tanker drivers are expected to strike for four days at a time, then work for two days, then strike again. Government officials have already been preparing contingency plans, this could include drafting in foreign hauliers and enlisting members of the Armed Forces. Around 80 highly qualified RAF drivers are expected to start training with haulage firms today.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey said that the Government had”‘well-developed contingency plans” for the first major tanker driver strike since 2000 but admitted they “can’t reduce the total impact, which could be very damaging” and “threaten economic recovery”.

UK Petrol sales fall as motorists tighten their belts

2011 has witnessed a significant slump in petrol sales in the UK with the very nice men at the AA predicting further falls in to 2012.

Petrol sales between January and September 2011 totalled 13.9 billion litres showing a fall of over over 6%. The economic downturn together with the rising price of fuel is forcing motorists think twice about making journeys unless they are absolutely necessary.

Results of an AA survey of more than 20,000 members has shown that 40% will resort to hypermiling either make less journeys or try to drive more economically in 2012.

Head of AA public affairs; Paul Watters commented, “Drivers are clearly being forced into cutting their motoring by the high price of fuel and, for many, this will impose difficult constraints on their lives. We have reached the stage where motoring is once again only easily affordable for the better off and, with the car still the mainstay means of travel for the majority, that is depressing news at the start of 2012.”

For those reading this that are considering driving more economically in 2012 see our Hypermiling Techniques page.

Morrisons looses £400m due to rising fuel prices, gains it on the forecourt

Their figures show that much of this money simply moved from the checkout to the fuel forecourt. Morrisons fuel sales benefited from higher oil prices, rising 18% over the last year on a like-for-like basis. That boosted its total turnover from petrol and diesel by over £530m, lucky them!

If this trend is “the norm” for other UK fuel and food retailers, the increased turn over has been a windfall for the government who are yet to introduced the mythical “fare fuel stabiliser”.

With £400m less food on the table and an extra £530m in our fuel tanks just from Morrisons alone, it seems to many that something going very wrong for UK motorists. Again the AA has urged Mr Cameron and other expense fiddling cronies to make a reduction in fuel dity and VAT, as expected, its falled on dumb deaf ears.

Petrol prices surpass £6 per gallon

Petrol prices surpass £6 per gallon

Over £6 a gallon for unleaded and diesel

Average petrol prices have gone past the 132p a litre mark, meaning that for the first time the cost has reached £6 a gallon, the AA said.

The average price of petrol at the pumps is now 132.12p a litre, while diesel has also hit a new record at 137.92p a litre.

The cost of petrol has risen 6.93p a litre since the start of the year, and 1.68p a litre in the past week, said the AA.

A year ago, a litre of petrol on average cost 114.30p and diesel was 115.31p.

For a family with two petrol cars, the monthly cost of fuel has risen from £242.70 in March 2010 to £280.54 now.

The AA urges UK motorists to help the fight against fuel prices

THE AA has urged drivers to back the Mirror’s Will the Penny Drop campaign and protest against sky-high petrol and diesel prices.

Company bosses have drafted an online petition for motorists to send to their MPs to ensure the penny-per-litre fuel tax is dropped.

The move comes as half of drivers cut back on car use because of soaring prices, with 90% telling the AA they feel powerless to act.

A fifth said prices had forced them off the road and on to public transport and one in 10 revealed they are car-sharing with friends.

Diesel currently costs 133.26p a litre, beating the 2008 high of 133.25p. A litre of unleaded is 128.62p – 3.5p more than in January.

AA president Edmund King said yesterday: “Motorists are punch-drunk from fuel duty increases and shocked at the cost of filling up. From past experience, we know protests can focus ministers’ minds.”

Fuel prices to soar again after BP pipeline leak

most expensive projects trans alaska pipeline system in snow 300x200 Fuel prices to soar again after BP pipeline leak

BP's fuel pipe line has been blamed for the recent increases in fuel prices

Fuel prices could hit new highs after a BP pipeline leak in Alaska caused the cost of oil to soar, motoring groups warned last night.

Despite the leak, the AA said the rises were being driven by speculators and ‘pure greed’.

The row came as diesel yesterday broke through £6 a gallon. The average price of petrol was already at a record of 127.8p a litre and heading towards £1.30 a litre following a double whammy tax increase last week.

Diesel costs 132.05p a litre – a fraction short of its all-time high of 133.25p set in July 2008.

David Cameron is under pressure to cut the level of duty whenever the pump price becomes excessively high in a so-called fuel-price stabiliser.
