Ford Focus EV expected to be rated at 100MPGe

The production of the all new Ford Focus EV has has begun, hot on the media trail Ford is already stating that it expects the Focus to be rated at the equivalent 100 mpg (MPGe).  

Like the Nissan Leaf, Ford claims that the Focus will be able to achieved up to 100 miles on a charge. The difference being that the Focus EV will charge in half the time it takes the Leaf. They claim it will only require 3 hours juicing from a 240V charging point for a charge, less than half of that of the Leaf.

The Focus EV will sell for around $39,995 in the US, making it about the same price as the Volt and over $5,000 more expensive than the Nissan Leaf . Dealers in the US are already taking orders from our early adopting cousins over the Atlantic.

The Ford Focus EV is expected to arrive in Europe by late 2012.

Ford continues it’s green streak with 1.0L “EcoBoost” engine

According to the press release the boffins at Dunton Ford technical centre UK have been working on a number of improvements that improve thermal efficency while reducing friction. Other improvements include an offset crankshaft and a split cooling system that allows the cylinder block to warm up before the head, thus improving efficiency when the engine is cold.

The turbo charged Ecoboost range of engines have been adopted in up to 90% of Ford’s 2011 vehicle line up. The forced induction route allows much greater power delivery from smaller engines. In fact this engine is the smalled engine yet from the boys at the blue oval and follows the trend for smaller and more efficient engines as fuel prices around the globe soar.

The mini motor made its European debut in the Ford B-MAX at the Geneva Motor Show this year, further details will be released in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

The New Ford Focus will "Focus" your mind on how you drive and save fuel

The new 2012 Ford Focus represents the first example of the automaker’s “One Ford” global product strategy. Under this approach, Ford engineers set out to design vehicles that are exactly the same for all markets. Since Ford’s fuel-saving EcoMode technology will be available in the Focus, we expect the green tech to be seen across the globe.

EcoMode is a software application tool that rates driving behavior by measuring various parameters such as gear selection, consistency in throttle application and vehicle speed. The software analyzes this data and relays tips that the driver can utilize in an attempt to improve fuel efficiency.

In internal tests, Ford discovered that eco-driving techniques can boost fuel economy an average of 24 percent. Ford is quick to point out that vehicles lacking EcoMode technology can still be driven in such a way that should improve fuel efficiency. The automaker preaches these eco-driving techniques:

  • Using the highest drivable gear
  • Smooth accelerations and decelerations
  • Maintaining constant speeds and anticipating traffic flow
  • Using cruise control on the highway
  • Avoiding excessive idling
  • Avoiding short trips with a cold engine

Ford teases the world with this image of its upcoming Focus EV

This week Ford teased the imminent unveiling of the Focus EV by releasing a single image on Facebook showcasing the vehicle’s illuminated, Tron-like plug port. As you’d expect from Ford on the release of such an anticipated vehicle, details are scarce — but CEO Alan Mulally said the company will have big news from the 2011 International CES Las Vegas. He added that Ford would broadcast his keynote address on a live streaming Facebook tab that will also feature exclusive technology news every hour leading up to his address.
