Show your support for UK Fuel protests!

News has been rife around the Internet that every one’s favorite social networking site “Facebook” has removed one of the protest support pages for this event.

We can confirm that the Coryton Fuel protest IS still happening and they need your full support. The last event suffered from a lower then expected turn out but organisers are doing everything they can to help drum up interest for their fight against soaring fuel prices in the UK.

Here are the full details

Protest Location:
Saturday, February 5 · 10:00am – 11:30pm
Coryton Oil Refinery, The Manorway, Stanford le Hope, United Kingdom, Essex SS17 9LL
Find it on Google maps

More details from the Organisers

The refinery is the busiest in the United Kingdom providing oil to BP, Shell and Exxon to name a few. By protesting on the road, distribution can be stopped dead. Every tanker that is stopped from exiting prevents 34,000 litres (7,500 gallons) of fuel flowing into London.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND INVITE ALL YOUR FRIENDS

There is only ONE road into refinery The Manorway – so loads of vehicles could jam that road easily driving around the area in go slow. With people on foot protesting near the road too that would cause massive disruption.

A final note to the Police: this is a peaceful protest so please leave us alone to exercise our right in a democratic society.

AA urges motorists to fight against fuel price rises

The AA urges UK motorists to help the fight against fuel prices

THE AA has urged drivers to back the Mirror’s Will the Penny Drop campaign and protest against sky-high petrol and diesel prices.

Company bosses have drafted an online petition for motorists to send to their MPs to ensure the penny-per-litre fuel tax is dropped.

The move comes as half of drivers cut back on car use because of soaring prices, with 90% telling the AA they feel powerless to act.

A fifth said prices had forced them off the road and on to public transport and one in 10 revealed they are car-sharing with friends.

Diesel currently costs 133.26p a litre, beating the 2008 high of 133.25p. A litre of unleaded is 128.62p – 3.5p more than in January.

AA president Edmund King said yesterday: “Motorists are punch-drunk from fuel duty increases and shocked at the cost of filling up. From past experience, we know protests can focus ministers’ minds.”

The protests of 2008 where truckers caused road chaos

Haulage  firms are threatening to blockade the roads if fuel taxes continue to rocket.

A survey of firms across the West Midlands has unearthed widespread unrest about the Government’s plans to introduce more petrol and diesel duties.

We dozens of companies with some stating, anonymously, that they would consider a law-breaking blockade if fuel costs continued to soar.

Robbie Thacker, owner of Bedworth Haulage Company in Coventry, said he would back any legal protest – but drew the line at the blockade.

The truck boss, 56, said: “We would be prepared to take part in a legal protest, but we don’t have the freedom to blockade.

‘‘If you take illegal action they can remove your licence. It’s not that I wouldn’t, it’s that I couldn’t.

“But we do know that other people are interested in taking that sort of action.

“I am just a genuine bloke who is trying to earn a living.’’

Chancellor George Osborne hints at fuel price help in budget

uk budget 23 june 2010 Chancellor George Osborne hints at fuel price help in budget

Is this a ploy to settle increasing action by protest groups on fuel prices?

Help for hard-pressed motorists could be on the way after Chancellor George Osborne gave a strong signal he will tackle rising fuel prices in his Budget in March.

He said he was looking at two things, the first would be “overriding” the fuel duty due to come into force in April which was announced by Alistair Darling when he was chancellor.

The second option would be a “stabiliser” – when the oil price goes up, the Government gets more revenue and they help the motorist by reducing the tax.

In an interview, Mr Osborne said drivers would have to wait for March 23, the Budget.

He said the price of fuel had increased partly because the cost of oil has gone up dramatically to around 100 US dollars a barrel, but also due to tax rises announced before he took office.

Asked if he can tackle the April rise, Mr Osborne told BBC West Midlands: “We can override it – we’re looking at it.”

NFU rules out high-profile fuel protests, deems them “counter-productive”

PK and Robert Craig 1 NFU rules out high profile fuel protests, deems them counter productive

NFU President Peter Kendall

NFU (National Farmers Union) president Peter Kendall has ruled out a high-profile protest against rising fuel prices, saying it would be counter-productive.

“We are not going to get any public sympathy or support if farmers are seen to be holding up motorway traffic with their tractors,” he said.

He stressed that rising fuel costs were a major concern for farmers and the NFU was taking the subject very seriously.

“As Boris Johnson said this week, there is something wrong when it costs more to fill up your car than fly to Spain. Farmers are not the only ones to be affected by rising fuel prices and it makes sense for us to work together with other organisations.”

He added that high road and heating fuel costs hit rural dwellers hard, particularly the very poor, while the impact on inflation was also significant.
