The UK Budget 2012, what it means for motorists UPDATE

uk budget fuel duty fuel prices hypermiling The UK Budget 2012, what it means for motorists UPDATE

Finance minister George Osborne will unveil Britain’s annual budget this afternoon. The likely hood is that motorists will cop the sharp end of the stick with rises in fuel duty going head as planned. We’ll keep you updated throughout the afternoon as things progress.

UPDATE

Well looks like motorists will continue to take the big one from the men at number ten.  Despite pressure from pressure groups such as FairFueluk and hauliers, there will be a 3.02p per litre hike in fuel duty from August.

This has already sparked rumors of renewed fuel protests like the events at Stanlow Fuel Refinery last year.

Fuel duty rises will see diesel ploughing through the 1.50 per litre marker. A sad day for all.

Fuel campaigners to meet government minister to over soaring fuel prices

fair fuel uk Fuel campaigners to meet government minister to over soaring fuel prices

Fuel Campaigners are to meet Treasury minister Chloe Smith today to demand action over fuel prices. Millions of motorists and businesses are being crippled over soaring fuel prices that are starting to peak at over £1.50 a litre in some filling stations across the UK.

The figures show that Britain has the highest diesel prices of any country in the EU, while the price of unleaded petrol is the eighth highest.

If campaigners are unsuccessful the postponed rise in fuel tax from January this year will bite, adding 3.02ppl to a litre of fuel from August 2012.

Chancellor George Osborne has already refused to slash fuel duty in next month’s Budget, saying he had already done enough to help drivers and that “the British government has run out of money”.

Campaign group FairFuelUK said high levels of fuel duty meant that petrol pump prices were now around 20p a litre more expensive than the EU average.

Quentin Willson, the group’s main spokesman, said: “We pay tax on our earnings so that we can buy these vital commodities, and then we pay VAT on the fuel duty. The Europe league table of fuel duty levels is one which we should not be top of. Today we will be meeting the Treasury to demonstrate that a cut in duty will help Treasury revenues, not harm them.”

Chancellor scraps planned fuel duty rise

george osbourne futy duty price freeze 300x241 Chancellor scraps planned fuel duty riseUK motorists have been spared further pain at the fuel pumps today as George Osborne announced a freeze in fuel duty during his Autumn Statement.

A 3p rise on tax paid on both unleaded petrol and diesel was due to come into effect on January 1 but the increase has been cancelled. Mr Osborne has also confirmed that the further rise in August of 2012 has been reduced from 5p to 3p a litre.

The scrapping of the duty increase comes after an online petition by the fairfuelUK group, headed by Quentin Wilson forced a government debate over fuel prices.

In a statement on the fairfuelUK Quentin Willson, spokesman for FairFuelUK said, ‘This is a victory for FairFuelUK but only a stay of execution. We’ve saved the UK 9p since March in proposed fuel duty rises and we are now the gatekeepers of fuel sanity for this country. We’re going to carry on pressurising this government to keep duty down and reduce it significantly. If we don’t they’ll hike it up again the first chance they get”.

Families have been struggling to cope as fuel prices bite. Many have opted for more fuel efficient cars such as diesels or hybrid cars.

The Chancellor has claimed that these combined measures in duty would save the average UK family £144 per year.

UK Budget is out… fuel duty cut by 1p tonight 6PM [update]

Chancellor of the Exchequ 006 300x180 UK Budget is out... fuel duty cut by 1p tonight 6PM [update]Speaking to House of Commons today, George Osborne confirmed that Fuel Duty will be frozen CUT by 1p a litre as of 6PM tonight.

The fuel prices escalator had been set to add another 5p on a litre of fuel at the beginning of April, this has been officially scrapped.

In sweeping changes to UK tax and duty the Chancellor also announced the introduction of the mythical fair fuel stabiliser. This should help protect UK motorists from the volatile fuel price surges that have been causing such upset.

These measures are firmly aimed at helping UK motorists already suffering as inflation and food prices take hold.

Mr Osborne’s further announcements included £100 million to help councils repair our “pot holed” and ruined roads.

The fuel duty cut came as quite a surprise and even surpassed Labours request for fuel duty to be frozen. All we ask is… what took you so long?

George Osborne hints that fuel duty maybe frozen

budget box 001 300x180 George Osborne hints that fuel duty maybe frozen Chancellor George Osborne has told the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show that he was “looking very carefully” at freezing the duty in Wednesday’s Budget. In todays interview Mr Osbourne  said he understood the pressure motorists were under from record-high petrol prices.

The government has been under pressure from motoring groups and opposition parties who are calling for the planned increase to be scrapped.

Its extimated that an extra £2.2 billion will have been generated from the increase in VAT alone. This figure does not take into account the extra duty collected by the increases in fuel prices as the trouble continues in the middle east.

Welsh call for 5p cut in rural petrol price

3507985753 a5a2a13f7b Welsh call for 5p cut in rural petrol price Wales has been in talks with the Treasury to include rural Wales in a scheme to cut petrol costs by up to 5p a litre “in the vallies, is it?!” isolated areas.

The Conservative Welsh Minister David Jones made an announcement in the Commons, saying fuel prices were a “pressing issue” in large swathes of the Welsh countryside.

Earlier this month Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne appeared to rule out the inclusion of any area of Wales in the scheme during a visit to Cardiff.

He said he would “love to have extended the pilot scheme”, which is due to affect several Scottish islands and the Isles of Scilly, but he could not because he was barred by EU law.

Mr Osborne said the scheme could only run in “remote island communities”, but yesterday Mr Jones said he was pushing Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander for the inclusion of rural Wales.

It is understood he wrote to Mr Alexander in January following a review of the impact of the recession on rural Wales.

While it is not expected that Wales would be included in the first wave of the pilot scheme, it is hoped that the nation’s most remote areas could qualify afterwards in a further pilot stage.
