US Hypermilers squeeze 1,626 miles from a tank in Volkswagen Passat TDi

US Hypermilers John and Helen Taylor have yet again rocketed into the record books with another epic FE (fuel efficency) run. Equipped with nothing more than a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE TDI Clean Diesel and one tank of fuel (or gas in the US) they managed an impressive 1,626 miles from the tank. In “American” that’s 84.1 miles per gallon or a whopping 101 MPG if you are from this side of the Atlantic.

The three-day drive road trip started on May 3, 2012 from Houston, TX onwards to  Sterling, Virginia 2 days later. In order to recreate normal driving conditions, the Taylor’s only travelled during daylight hours and carried a respectable 120 (US) pounds of luggage.

“We’re excited to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel,” said John Taylor. “The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet is frugal enough to help us achieve this record.”

Their The previous record for the most miles covered on a single tank of diesel was 1526.6 miles, achieved with a VW Passat 1.6 BlueMotion diesel in Europe.

The Taylor’s have made a whole career out of driving efficiently hypermiling and conduct workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. To date they have collected more than 90 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe.

Head on over to our Hypermiling forum to discuss this.

Fat Americans waste a billion more gallons of fuel every year

fat americans use more fuel mpg hypermiling Fat Americans waste a billion more gallons of fuel every year

Chances are, if you are American, you haven’t been able to see your toes since you were 8 years old. The obesity epidemic in the US might be good news for Wendy’s and McDonalds but not so good for your miles per gallon.

The Atlantic magazine in the US has reported that for every additional pound of passenger lard weight, the United States uses up another 39 million gallons of fuel each year. A more frightening figure is that Americans consume at least a billion gallons more fuel every year than they would have if people were as trim as they were in 1960. In UK money (at our average diesel price of £6.68 per gallon) thats a staggering £6 BILLON pounds a year in extra fuel from those “extra pounds”.

Unfortunately for us “plucky” brits we’re heading the same way, causing extra load on our failing NHS and also hurting us at the pumps. In the UK, fatties with BMI of 30kg/m2 or more are classed as obese, and thats a whopping 1 in 3 people.

So next time you budding Hypermilers go searching in the trunk boot for weighty items you can dispose of, maybe think about swapping your fish and chips supper for something a little better for your waist line. Why not go the whole hog and walk. You’ll kill two birds with one stone and maybe lose a few stones in the process.

Hybrid Hypermiling Techniques

After countless miles, hours and counties behind the wheel of Toyota’s Auris Hyrbid I thought I’d put together a page dedicated to Hypermiling techniques our little twin engine’d companions.

The Hypermiling Challenge with Car Magazine taught me a lot about how hybrid systems work and also how to take full advantage of them to record some most epic of MPG figures. Check out the Hybrid Hypermiling techniques page to see how you can wring every last mile from your hybrid.

Hypermiler.co.uk and Car Magazine go “Coast to Coast” in Toyota Auris Hypermiling Challenge

Going from coast to coast might not sound like a particularly hard challenge, especially with the current crop of “super diesels” that have flooded the UK market. So what happens when you take a Toyota Auris Hybrid with its 1.8L Hybrid Synergy Drive, 130BHP and hulking battery packs en route?

Our challenge was to pilot Hypermile the Auris from Gt. Yarmouth to the Isle of Anglesey racetrack on just one tank, with the remainder of the fuel used to lap the “duck” short circuit.

As you can see from the video above, we managed to get there on the single tank and proceeded to put the Hybrid Toyota though it’s paces with very little regard to MPG. Its hulking weight and super soft suspension it made for some “interesting” laps on the rainy track,  mostly accompanied by an array of warning buzzes and lights as the car was pushed well beyond the limits of its usual day to day use.

For your chance of winning six months of free fuel (well £437) head on over to the Car Magazine website. Simply guess how many laps we managed to wring out of the Auris before we ran out of fuel. Before you ask… I will not be giving any clues!

I managed many hours Hypermiling the nuts off the Auris while being subjected to amazing uncomfortable seats, I’ll be putting together a mini review of my experiences of the Toyota Auris Hyrid on the challenge.

The fuel shortage farce: Ministers getting it wrong as motorists suffer

fuel shortages rationing tanker strikes hypermiling The fuel shortage farce: Ministers getting it wrong as motorists suffer

Even though the union Unite has not confirmed the tanker strike for the Easter holidays, Motorists are still queuing at the pumps causing shortages even before the planned action. Panicked motorists have been spurred on by a mix of misinformation coming from the UK government and media.

First Francis Maude was openly recommending stockpiling fuel in Jerry cans, followed up from the rear by Ed Davey telling motorists to keep half a tank in reserve. Mr Davey has again changed his tune and is now advising to top up when you are at two thirds of a tank. This farce has continued as scores of filling stations remain dry as panic buying ensues.

Petrol sales have increased by 81 per cent and diesel by 43 per cent compared to normal. The increased demand has caused chaos for retailers with many filling stations implementing fuel rationing.

In response to the fuel farce AA president Edmund King said: “There is no fuel tanker strike and therefore if drivers followed normal fuel buying patterns there would be no fuel shortage whatsoever. We now have self-inflicted shortages due to poor advice about topping up the tank and hoarding in jerry cans. This in turn has led to localised shortages, queues and some profiteering at the pumps.”

In such troubled times for motorists we urge you to keep a cool head and make the most of every drop of fuel. Hypermiling is about maximising your fuel efficiency of your vehicle, its never been such a good time to start!

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #10: Parking

car parking hypermiling Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #10: Parking

Most people don’t take parking into consideration when thinking about fuel consumption. Many lazy motorists try to park in the most convenient place possible that will mean the shortest walk possible for their fat little legs. In reality, your choice of space can make a huge difference to your MPG and wallet.

Our ultimate tip for you “Hypermiler”s out there is to always ensure you either reverse in or “face out” when parking. Lengthy maneuvers while the engine is cold and thus using more fuel is a real killer for FE (fuel economy). Combining this with parking away from the busy crowed parking spaces means you can start up and drive off without running the gauntlet of mobility scooters and parents with runaway trollies

In the summer months (or days in the UK) try and park in a shady spot, it can make not using the air conditioning a lot easier! In the winter try and position your car to face into the sun on frosty mornings, this will reduce idling and time spent digging away at your frozen windscreen with a broken credit card.
