US Hypermilers John and Helen Taylor have yet again rocketed into the record books with another epic FE (fuel efficency) run. Equipped with nothing more than a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE TDI Clean Diesel and one tank of fuel (or gas in the US) they managed an impressive 1,626 miles from the tank. In “American” that’s 84.1 miles per gallon or a whopping 101 MPG if you are from this side of the Atlantic.

The three-day drive road trip started on May 3, 2012 from Houston, TX onwards to  Sterling, Virginia 2 days later. In order to recreate normal driving conditions, the Taylor’s only travelled during daylight hours and carried a respectable 120 (US) pounds of luggage.

“We’re excited to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel,” said John Taylor. “The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet is frugal enough to help us achieve this record.”

Their The previous record for the most miles covered on a single tank of diesel was 1526.6 miles, achieved with a VW Passat 1.6 BlueMotion diesel in Europe.

The Taylor’s have made a whole career out of driving efficiently hypermiling and conduct workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. To date they have collected more than 90 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe.

Head on over to our Hypermiling forum to discuss this.

What Car? launches True MPG. Giving motorists “real world” fuel efficiency figures

what care true mpg hypermiling What Car? launches True MPG. Giving motorists real world fuel efficiency figuresWhat Car? in association with Tesco Petrol Filling Stations have launched True MPG, the only program to give motorists “real world” fuel efficiency figures from the same roads we all face each day.

True MPG will base its figures on real life driving conditions where as manufacture’s ”claimed” MPG figures are based on laboratory findings with men in white coats. Motorists can simply log on to www.whatcar.com/truempg and work out the fuel economy they can expect to get from their next new car.

“With rising fuel prices, the miles-per-gallon issue is high on every motorist’s agenda. Countless car buyers are frustrated that they don’t match the official government fuel figures. True MPG will allow motorists to select a car personalised to their driving needs and budget. We hope that it will become invaluable in the complex and emotional car-buying process,” said What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett.

They test vehicles using a portable emissions-measurement system which will record a variety of data from the car. It captures carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide and optionally total hydrocarbons. From the carbon dioxide output and knowledge of the exact fuel in the tank, the fuel consumption in miles per gallon can be calculated via the mass balance method with a high degree of accuracy.

We applaud What Car? for this scheme,  I often speak to motorists that are disappointed with their MPG results compared with manufacturers figures. Having checked the website, we note that some of the most popular “super” MPG models are strangely absent from the listings, however those available show quite a difference.

The hugely popular BMW 320d is shown to achieve 54.8 on the motorway by What Car? compared to the “claimed” 64.8MPG, a difference of just over 18%. That might not sound much but over and average yearly mileage of 12,000 miles that’s an extra £160 in fuel.

We are hoping that this will help nudge car makers to giving more realistic MPG results for their fleet.

London Routemaster Hybrid enters service giving twice the MPG and half the emissions

London Routemaster Hybrid enters service giving twice the MPG and half the emissions

The new Routemaster Hybrid which offers twice the MPG as it’s diesel sibling, hit the dark and gritty streets of London for first time yesterday. The bus is currently serving route 38 for  the lucky people traveling between Victoria and Hackney.

The Hypermiling hybrid bus, modelled on the classic Routemaster, was meant to enter service last week but due to red tape at the Department for Transport it was delayed.

The bus features a diesel-electric hybrid drive system that works a little differently to the current crop of production hybrid cars. It’s diesel engine works as a generator for the electric motor rather than put power to the wheels. The 4.5L diesel unit simply “ticks” over at 1300RPM while powering and recharging the battery packs. This combined with the single speed transition means that the bus offers a very smooth ride for its 87 seats.

The new hybrid double decker 15 per cent more fuel efficient than existing hybrid buses and more than 40 per cent more efficient than existing diesel double-deckers. It’s secondary electric drive system also helps to reduce noise pollution.

The program has already come under fire from Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy who has rasied concerns regarding the rather steep price tag of the new buses. Each hybrid routemaster costs a whopping £1.4m compared to just £190,000 for a standard double-decker.

Green campaigners have also noted that only 52 of the 800 buses destined for the capitals city streets will be Hybrid. Quashing previous claims by Boris Johnson that all buses entering service from 2o12 will feature hybrid technology.

Boris has defended his new green red hybrids, calling them “the very best in British design, engineering and manufacture. But it’s not just a pretty face, the green innards of this red bus mean it is twice as fuel efficient as a diesel bus and the most environment-friendly of its kind.

“When ordered in greater numbers it will make a significant economic contribution to the manufacturing industries, while also helping deliver a cleaner, greener and more pleasant city.”

Test figures have shown that the Route master Hybrid emits only 640 grams per kilometre (g/km) of carbon dioxide and 3.96 g/km of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). This is less than half the level of carbon dioxide and NOx emitted by a derv powered people movers.

US proposes new fuel efficiency standards: 54.5 MPG by 2025

usa cafe epa fuel standards US proposes new fuel efficiency standards: 54.5 MPG by 2025

With fuel prices over the US only a fraction on what we motorists mugs pay here in the UK, 54.5 MPG will seem like an huge inconvenience achievement. Especially when you consider the average MPG of US cars brought in 2010 was a measly 32 MPG.

The  U.S. Department of Transportation, EPA and the White House have announced new fuel economy standards for model year 2017-2025 vehicles that will require cars and light trucks to yield a combined 54.5 mpg.

According to government over the pond, these standards will help save the US as much as 2.2 million barrels of oil per day by 2025. They go as far to say that new car buyers in 2025 will save $6,600 in fuel costs over the lifetime of their new “ride”. Even taking in to consideration the extra cost of fuel saving technologies they still estimate a saving of over $4000 before the car is condemned to the garage in the sky.

We’ll watch with interest how manufactures plan to achieve such “modest” improvements required to meet the new standards. Lets hope they will drive innovation in new technologies that will benefit motorists all over the world.

Kia Rio CRDi steals the UK MPG crown with an epic 88 MPG

kia rio 88mpg Kia Rio CRDi steals the UK MPG crown with an epic 88 MPG

It wasn’t that long ago that people looked down their noses at Korea’s finest automobile manufacturer.  Since a complete design overhaul, many people have started to take notice, including Top Gear who are currently using the Kia Cee’d as their reasonably priced car. Even I was taken back by the presence of the new Kia Sportage.

With styling aside Kia have played a most bold and clever move of introducing the Kia Rio CDi. Sporting a 74bhp 1100cc derv power plant, the Rio has ripped the UK’s MPG crown from the Smart Fortwo CDi by achieving an epic 88 MPG. It leaves behind the Smart, Skoda and even the Polo bluemotion in its eco “wake”.

The Rio joins the rest of the ultra low MPG cars with some clever “EcoDynamics” tech. Low rolling resistance tyres, Intelligent Stop & Go engine technology, a drag friendly front grille and shift indicator help the Rio achieve its amazing efficiency while producing only 85g of Co2 per kilometer.

As with most cars in the MPG race, the super mini qualifies for free road tax and is congestion charge exempt in our fair capital.

The Rio his dealers next week, hit us up if you are one of the lucky owners – we would love to hear how much it returns in the “real world”.

Skoda’s Green line Fabia achieves an epic 127.8MPG

Skoda Fabia GreenLine II Skodas Green line Fabia achieves an epic 127.8MPGSkoda used to be a brand the British mocked for its unreliability and brick like aerodynamic qualities. Since its full absorption into the VAG group in 2000, Skoda has gone from strength to strength with unhindered access to the VW and related companies parts bin. Loosing its lousy reputation in the process.

The Czech cars of late have been riding the ECO wave with its “green line” brand, much similar to the “bluemotion” sticker worn by the fuel sipping peoples car of Germany.

As fuel prices around the globe soar, the ultra efficient cars of late have become very popular with those wanting to save at the pumps. Austria’s very own “eco driver” Gerhard Plattner has proven what is capable with the latest breed of Skoda’s frugal flagship.

Armed only with a Skoda Fabia Greenline and 45 litres of derv, he managed to record a whopping 1,246 miles, or 127.8 MPG.

Epic Hypermiling aside, the little Czech fuel sipper has a few tricks under its sleeve to help the Fabia return such mighty economy. Low rolling resistance tyres, Start – Stop technology and a lowered ride height all contribute to its “official” 83.1MPG rating. Its 1.2 three-pot turbo diesel unit may lack the power demanded my many motorists, but such efficiency ratings speak volumes for the little green Skoda.
