Fuel tanker strike averted after drivers agree deal

The threat of a damaging fuel tanker strike was averted yesterday after drivers voted by just a 1% margin accept a peace deal. After eight days of talks with the conciliation service Acas, Unite said that just 51% of it’s members had backed proposals to end a long-running dispute over job terms and conditions.

In four out of the seven firms involved in the talks, tanker drivers rejected the offer on safety standards and training – but overall the deal will go through, if only by a fine margin.

Diana Holland, Unite assistant general secretary said: ‘This narrow vote in favour lifts the threat of strike action, but leaves the companies with no room for complacency. The progress made through negotiation is testament to the brave stance members have taken in the face of growing insecurity and attacks on their profession. The narrow vote in favour should be a wake-up call for an industry riddled with deep-seated problems. This is why we are writing to the select committee urging them to investigate the instability in the industry.”

Acas welcomed the breakthrough with their chief conciliator Peter Harwood saying: “The dispute was a very complex one and both the employers and the trade union representatives worked very hard during long sessions at Acas to shape a solution that addressed the issues facing the sector.”

The Energy Secretary, Ed Davey said ‘This is the right result for those involved in the dispute and for the economy”

The end of the dispute will put both motorists and UK businesses at ease. The panic surrounding the last proposed strike caused chaos at the pumps as panic buying spread across the UK with many filling stations forced to closed as stocks ran dry.

Motorists panic buying fuel as Coryton Fuel Refinery closes

coryton fuel refinery closure Motorists panic buying fuel as Coryton Fuel Refinery closes

Motorists have been urged not to panic buy fuel as the news of  the Coryton fuel refinery closure spreads.

The refinery, which supplies over 20% of the fuel to London and the South East stopped supplies when its Swiss-owned parent company Petroplus went into administration.

News of the closure has already sparked panic buying around the UK, with news coverage of the closure further prompting motorists to “stock up”.

Oil Minister, Charles Hendry said  “We don’t want everybody to go out and get it [fuel] tonight, because that clearly wouldn’t be helpful. People need to be completely confident that if they go about their business as normal then there is completely enough fuel available and that BP and Shell have been going to great lengths to make sure that is the case.

“There is the capacity in some of the other refineries in the UK. Companies like BP and Shell, who are the main buyers of the output from Coryton, have already made short-term arrangements to make sure that they get the fuel from other sources. We have spare import capacity so we can bring extra fuel in as necessary.”

We are keep to see how this if effecting fourecourt queues in your area, let us know in the comments how your local station is holding up.

Breaking News: Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade set to last 8 days

FuelShortage Breaking News: Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade set to last 8 daysA  source on twitter informed us this afternoon that the Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade is set to last 8 long days, this has been now been officially confirmed by the organisers of Sundays protest.

Stanlow Refinery produces close to 7 million tonnes of petrol and diesel a year and employs over 960 people. The plant is responsible for 15% of the UK’s fuel production.

A blockade of this type for 8 days will sevearly effect fuel supply and distribution, causing shortages across the UK.

We have tried to make contact with the refinery directly but at present they are yet to make a statement regarding the planned blockade.

I  for one will be making sure both our cars are filled this evening… if I can afford it!

We’ll keep you updated throughout the weekend.

Threat of petrol station closures as tanker strike talks fail

Britain is facing possible petrol shortages after the country’s largest union threatened to call 3,000 fuel tanker drivers out on strike.

Unite, the union behind the British Airways cabin crew strike, has announced a wave of ballots across the industry in a long-running dispute over working conditions and pensions.

This could lead to drivers employed by oil companies, supermarkets and haulage contractors walking out in late February or early March.
