Future Car Challenge, the green way from London to Brighton.

future car challenge Future Car Challenge, the green way from London to Brighton.
For the second year running the RAC will be holding the Future Car Challenge. Unlike the name would suggest the goal of the event is to travel from  London to Brighton using as little energy as possible.

Taking place on November 5th, the event is open to all makes and models including EV’s, plug-ins, hybrid cars and even low productions / one offs.  The event is aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of alternative-fueled vehicles to UK motorists who are still very wary of the new technologies and limited ranges offered.

The challenge is to hypermile drive the 60 mile/92km official course from Brighton to London using the least energy possible within the 2hrs 45min minimum and 3hrs 30min maximum time permitted.

The event itself dates back to 1896, when 33 pioneering motorists set off in a variety of 19th century horseless carriages – at the time, the cutting edge of transport technology. They also celebrated the new road act of that year which increased the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and abandoned the need for a man on foot to precede each car while waving a red flag.

Fair Fuel UK takes the fight to the Treasury

584440 Fair Fuel UK takes the fight to the Treasury The Fair Fuel UK Campaign took its message to the Treasury and then Westminster in two high-profile media and public affairs events.

The demonstrators, headed by TV presenter and ex Top Gear presenter Quentin Willson called on Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to abandon a planned April fuel duty increase of 1p a litre and bring in measures to reduce and stabilise the cost of fuel.

The group protested outside the Treasury where they handed over a letter addressed to the Chancellor before delivering individually addressed letters to 600 MPs urging them to act.

Quentin Willson said: “Judging by the media presence and cross-party political support evident today, the momentum is really gathering, as are the number of signatories to our petition – over 47,000 so far. With FTA, RHA and RAC backing, the Campaign is truly representative of business, the motorist and, indeed, the general public concerned with the UK’s economic recovery. But with the Budget due in March we can’t afford to be complacent and would urge everyone who hasn’t already to sign our petition and make their voices loud and clear.”

The Road Haulage Association (RHA), the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the Fuel Card Company and the RAC are among the groups backing The FairFuelUK campaign.

RAC motoring strategist Adrian Tink said rising petrol prices were taking their toll on Britain’s 34 million drivers.

“Up and down the country motorists are being greeted with record fuel prices, virtually on a daily basis,” he said. “The Chancellor needs to show he understands the pain that UK drivers are feeling at the pumps — and that means scrapping the April fuel duty rise as a tangible statement of intent.”

RAC warn fuel prices could top £1.75 a litre

The £8 gallon soon to be the norm?

The 4th Emergency Service RAC Foundation today warned that fuel prices could rocket to £1.75 in some parts of the UK as volatile crude prices continue to cause pain for already hard up motorists.

The RAC Foundation spokesman Philip Gomm said: “For every $2 rise in the barrel of oil you tend to see an extra 1p at the pumps.”

“Oil prices are presently $100 a barrel but that is still a long way off from the historic high of $147 a barrel before the recession in 2008.

They have urged the government to take “Subtle” measures to protect motorists, especially if the fuel producing nations decide to “turn down the taps”. However the government is yet to confirm reports that a “fair fuel stabiliser” will be introduced in time for the next budget.

At £1.75 the average family hatch back would cost £105 to fill its 60 litre tank. If this were to become a reality we could expect motoring protests to step up to an unseen level, causing mass disruption to our already fragile economic state.
