Tesla sues Top Gear UK

tesla roadster Tesla sues Top Gear UKFans of the BBC’s hit motoring show Top Gear will remember Top Gears review of Tesla’s flagship EV, the Tesla Roadster.

The feature was cut short and the car was pushed into a the garage after a measly 55 miles of abuse from “The Stig” and his fellow presenters, sans electricity.

The boys over at Telsa have now (after 2 years) taken action against the “beeb” having filed a lawsuit for “libel and malicious falsehood”. They claim that two cars were provided and at all times at least one of them was ready and willing to action at the hand of Sir Stig. Tesla can also confirm from the EV’s on-board computers that neither of the cars ever dropped below 25 percent charge, meaning the stunt was err… Staged.

JC and the crew made a fair point about the limited range and slow recharge times of current EV’s but it seems that they may have overstepped the mark on this one. It’s just a good thing Tesla are not based in Mexico.

Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #3: Drive without brakes (DWB)

20090903 towing brake 320x240 rb 300x225 Our Weekly Hypermiling Tip #3: Drive without brakes (DWB)Hypermiling and fuel saving tips have been bouncing around the media of late and this technique is one that’s not considered by most. Driving without brakes isn’t quite what you would think.

Every time you brake you effectively turn fuel into heat & brake dust, wasting the energy you have consumed to get your car up to speed in the first place.

DWB is simply adapting your driving style so you minimize the use of your anchors. In order to achieve this we would suggest you do the following:

  • Keep a good distance away from the car in front of you
  • Choose a route that has the minimum number of junctions and stops

When slowing down, if you opt to simply to reduce or release the accelerator you let engine braking do the work and use little or no fuel while doing so. If you can also maintain as much speed as “safely” possible you also reduce the amount of energy needed to get back up to speed.

This technique is at the heart of every Hypermiler and was also recently recommended on TopGear by the main man JC himself.

This is only a very small part of hypermiling, see our Hypermiling Techniques page for more ways to save money at the pumps. Can you afford not to?

Plastic face JC giving out Hypermiling Tips

When Top Gear starts giving out Hypermiling Tips you really get the sense that something is very wrong with fuel prices in the UK.

Mr Clarkon’s advise on driving with out brakes is actually one of the effective and simple ways of increasing your fuel efficiency. Obviously this technique is only to be used in the right circumstances but its a great way of making sure you get the very most of every litre your engine consumes.

Their dose of POOOWWWEERR was not missing from the show as the 34 day old “Stig”annihilated the Top Gear track record in the facebending (see pic) Ariel Atom V8.

Drive without brakes. Every time you brake you effectively turn fuel into heat & brake dust. This type of deceleration maximises use of our cars stored momentum.

You can find out more about saving fuel and increasing your efficiency on our Hypermiling Techniques page… just tell them JC sent you.
