Volkswagen XL1 confirmed for 2013 production with 313 MPG in tow

VW XL1 300x170 Volkswagen XL1 confirmed for 2013 production with 313 MPG in towVolkswagen Group’s CEO Martin Winterkorn has confirmed that the two seater XL1 plug-in hybrid would hit the streets in low numbers in less than two years’ time.

The VW XL1 was unveiled to the world earlier this year at the Qatar Motor show.

Powered by a 27 horsepower electric motor and 48-horsepower two-cylinder diesel engine, the XL1 can go 100 km on less than a liter of fuel. That equates to just over 313 mpg by UK standards and 261 on the US cycle.

No details yet on pricing for availability for the UK market, but rest assured we will keep you posted.

The VW NILS… the future of “minimalist mobility”?

vw nils concept car The VW NILS... the future of minimalist mobility?

The Frankfurt Motor Show will usher in what VW describes as “The future of commuting from Volkswagen”, behold the NILS (What that stand for… I don’t have a clue!)

The NILS is a single-seat electric concept car from the German car maker that is designed to be both technically realistic and economically supportable. Unlike the diesel  VW XL1, it’s powered by a lightweight 19 kg electric motor with MPGe in mind. The NILS has been developed to offer a  range of 65 kilometres (40 miles) and a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph) perfect for a large percentage of single occupancy commuter journeys.

The NILS project is aimed squarely at what is currently technically realistic and economically feasible concept for a minimalist commuter vehicle, no doubt we will see features drip down into future production models from das auto manufacturer.

Design wise, it looks stunning. We’ll have to see if these “renders” are done justice when it gets its unveiling at Frankfurt. We’ll keep you posted. Read more for the full PR Statement from VW.

VW unveils its new XL1 Super Efficient Concept Vehicle returning 313MPG

The Volkswagen XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV), returning 313MPG

The new Volkswagen XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV) has been unveiled at the Qatar Motor Show.  Pioneering construction techniques, an advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain and innovative packaging all play a part in allowing the XL1 to return 313 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 24 g/km of CO2 to set a new benchmark for vehicle efficiency.

Powering the XL1 is a compact 800 cc TDI two-cylinder common rail diesel engine developing 48 PS.  It’s linked to an electric motor producing 27 PS, resulting in a total of 75 PS – a modest output yet more than enough when the low kerb weight (795 kg) of the vehicle is taken into account.

The TDI engine is linked to an electric motor and a seven-speed DSG gearbox with an automatic clutch mounted between each unit.  The electric motor can either work independently of the TDI engine or in tandem when accelerating.  In pure electric mode the XL1 can travel up to 35 km before the diesel engine cuts in.  Accelerating from rest to 62 mph can be achieved in 11.9 seconds; the electronically limited top speed is 99 mph.
