Today... I rode to work. 0MPG?!

Postby Karl » Fri Apr 09, 2010 12:48 pm

I bit the bullet today and dragged my ass to work on my bike.

The total of 11.2miles was covered in 53 minutes. Here is my fancy graph from the iPhone app RunKeeper (full app) http://rnkpr.com/a4on30

As you can see it was a bit up and down for the start but it flatted out nicely for the last 5 or so miles. Considering I've not been on the bike properly for a couple of years I faired quite well. All the time in the gym and walking the dogs certainly helped.

If it stays nice like it is now for a while I'll be making it a regular thing. I'm only a fair weather biker so if its cold, windy or raining I'll be back in the Golf.

now that was hard work coming back. http://rnkpr.com/a4p6in

As you can see from the graphs - going there was mosting downhill uphill most of the way back. Considering that I think I did pretty well not to ring the Mrs and get her to pick me up. Next time I'm going to take the bike over to her Mums and bike in from there. Its only 4.5 miles and no hills either.

Off for a shower and to chill out. Saved 23miles of fuel today... WIN!

Well done - 23 miles even at damn good mpg is still £2 saved, plus wear and tear on the car.

Can't see the maps though - apparently you have made it private (guessing not intentionally).

Lol, probably wise on the maps!

I have debated cycling to work, but there are several drawbacks:
1) I can't cycle particularly well as I have rubbish balance.
2) It's a 15 mile trip each way, which would take me conservatively 3 times longer than driving.
3) I am totally overweight and unfit!

I think even 11 miles is a bit too much really.

21 miles would be too much of a mission - esp if you don't have any showers at work.

Anything less than 5 miles is walkable, anything less than 10 is probably cyclable (if you can ride a bike) but much more than that is car or bus territory.

Just IMHO of course.

I agree with the biking but a 5 mile walk is a bit much. I do well to keep a decent pace when I walk my dogs in the evening but thats not quite 5MPH - and I certainly wouldnt not consider an hour walk to work in the morning. 2 miles I could deal with.

The weather is nice again today - if its nice tomorrow morning I'll be back on the bike again - only a ten mile round trip though.

As the weather was nice I decided to bike in from the inlaws this morning. Its only 4.3miles but I pushed myself much harder as I knew I didn't have to pace myself quite so much.

That will be another 10 miles of fuel I have saved.
