New UK car emissions drop 4.2 per cent in 2011

2011 vehicle emissions drop hypermiling New UK car emissions drop 4.2 per cent in 2011

According to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), average carbon emissions for new cars sold in 2011 fell by 4.2 per cent compared to the previous year.

The figures show that average CO2 emmissions have dropped below 140g/km for the very first time, a great step forward for meeting the 2015 European legislative target of 130g/km.

Sales records show that diesel and “alternative” powered cars have leaped ahead as cash strapped motorists attempt to slash their running costs as fuel prices surge. Sales of Diesel cars accounted for 50.6 per cent of the new car market, while hybrid and alternatively-fueled vehicles grew to 1.3 per cent of car sales in 2011

SMMT chief, Paul Everitt described 2011 as a landmark year for the auto industry’s efforts to curb emissions.

“Industry can be proud of the progress it has made in reducing CO2 emissions and improving fuel efficiency, 23 per cent since 2000. The UK motor industry recognises its responsibilities and the industrial opportunities from the transition to ultra-low carbon vehicles. Future environmental and economic success will be determined by sustained investment in new technology, R&D, infrastructure and consumer incentives.”

The report urged the government to take a larger role in emission reductions through tax incentives. Sales of eligible cars are already “subsidised” by the plug-in car grant to the tune of £5000. This has recently been extended to cover Vans with an even more generous £8000 off the new purchase price (the Plug-in Van Grant).

Total UK car sales have falled since the onset of the recession, down 4.4% from 2010 and 22% down on average sales between 2002 and 2007.

The Mercedes Aero trailer saves fuel… looks epic

mercedes aero trailer hypermiling The Mercedes Aero trailer saves fuel... looks epic

Fuel prices hurt everyone. Fact. But for those businesses that depend on fuel to run their fleets, any increases can have a massive effect on the viability of the organisation, putting jobs and lively hoods at risk.

Mercedes have stepped in to show hauliers what’s possible with an “ecomodded” “efficient” trailer design buy maximising the aerodynamic properties of something which is normally just a box with wheels. The streamlined cargo box features a front air dam, side trim panels rear diffuser, and a tapered rear design that adds up to an 18 percent reduction in wind resistance together with a fuel consumption reduction of 5 percent.

Mercedes suggest that a truck averaging over 93k miles or 150,000 kilometers per year will save 2,000 liters of diesel while saving five tons of CO2 emissions.

Kingdown School’s 1,980 MPG car wins Mallory Park Mileage Marathon

Kingdown School car Kingdown Schools 1,980 MPG car wins Mallory Park Mileage Marathon

The aerodynamic concept car built by students at Kingdown School won by the Mallory Park Mileage Marathon with an equivalent of 1,980 miles on a single gallon of fuel.

More than 20 schools from the UK competed in this years event including a car piloted by an 11 year old girl.

The Kingdown school’s car managed a whopping 1,000 mpg more than the second placed entry with their 40kg hypermiler.

The Mallory Park Mileage Marathon’s machines sacrifice speed for efficiency with teams opting for super light vehicles with very small capacity engines. The aim is to complete the course using the least fuel possible whilst maintaining a minimum speed of 15mph.

Ford continues it’s green streak with 1.0L “EcoBoost” engine

ford ecoboost 1.0 3 cylinder engine mpg release date models engine closeup 300x194 Ford continues its green streak with 1.0L EcoBoost engineFord is continuing its blue green streak by confirming the development of a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine.

According to the press release the boffins at Dunton Ford technical centre UK have been working on a number of improvements that improve thermal efficency while reducing friction. Other improvements include an offset crankshaft and a split cooling system that allows the cylinder block to warm up before the head, thus improving efficiency when the engine is cold.

The turbo charged Ecoboost range of engines have been adopted in up to 90% of Ford’s 2011 vehicle line up. The forced induction route allows much greater power delivery from smaller engines. In fact this engine is the smalled engine yet from the boys at the blue oval and follows the trend for smaller and more efficient engines as fuel prices around the globe soar.

The mini motor made its European debut in the Ford B-MAX at the Geneva Motor Show this year, further details will be released in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

Insuring your hybird car

hybrid car insurance Insuring your hybird carOver the past ten years or so hybrid cars have become increasingly popular. You may be aware that the first mass produced hybrid vehicle was the Toyota Prius which was initially launched in Japan in 1997. Three years later, in 2000, it was launched across the rest of the world and has gone on to be very popular with motorists and Hypermilers alike.

We’ve all become more and more aware about why it might be important to use a hybrid car. The burning of fossil fuels, such as petrol igniting in an internal combustion engine, releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Scientific consensus holds that this is a major contributor to global warming. It is believed that global warming will lead to various adverse effects, including rising sea levels, elevated temperatures and fresh water scarcity. Many people feel they are doing their bit for looking after the environment by buying a hybrid car.

If you want your car to be road worthy, then you must take out car insurance. It doesn’t matter what type of car you have – they all need it, even the hybrids. Car insurance will protect both yourself and your car just in case you have an accident or something happens to your car. After a little investigation, you will see that there is a huge range of different insurance rates depending on a variety of things. It is always best to talk to a car insurance provider like Aviva or any other well-known company to see what they have to say about prices and what would be the best plan for you.

One of the main things that affects how much car insurance you will have to pay is the price of the car itself. If you have been looking into getting a hybrid car you will see that the prices between the various models varies a fair bit. However it is fair to say that hybrid cars are generally more expensive than your average car, so you will find that car insurance companies are likely to quote a higher premium to cover any payouts in case of any problems. You will have to bear this in mind when you are considering purchasing a hybrid car. Try to weigh up the pros and cons, because at the end of the day it is your choice whether you believe it is worth paying more to insure your car, but at the same time knowing you are doing your own small bit with helping the environment.

Skoda’s Green line Fabia achieves an epic 127.8MPG

Skoda Fabia GreenLine II Skodas Green line Fabia achieves an epic 127.8MPGSkoda used to be a brand the British mocked for its unreliability and brick like aerodynamic qualities. Since its full absorption into the VAG group in 2000, Skoda has gone from strength to strength with unhindered access to the VW and related companies parts bin. Loosing its lousy reputation in the process.

The Czech cars of late have been riding the ECO wave with its “green line” brand, much similar to the “bluemotion” sticker worn by the fuel sipping peoples car of Germany.

As fuel prices around the globe soar, the ultra efficient cars of late have become very popular with those wanting to save at the pumps. Austria’s very own “eco driver” Gerhard Plattner has proven what is capable with the latest breed of Skoda’s frugal flagship.

Armed only with a Skoda Fabia Greenline and 45 litres of derv, he managed to record a whopping 1,246 miles, or 127.8 MPG.

Epic Hypermiling aside, the little Czech fuel sipper has a few tricks under its sleeve to help the Fabia return such mighty economy. Low rolling resistance tyres, Start – Stop technology and a lowered ride height all contribute to its “official” 83.1MPG rating. Its 1.2 three-pot turbo diesel unit may lack the power demanded my many motorists, but such efficiency ratings speak volumes for the little green Skoda.
