Fuel tanker strike averted after drivers agree deal

fuel tanker strike hypermiling acas Fuel tanker strike averted after drivers agree deal

The threat of a damaging fuel tanker strike was averted yesterday after drivers voted by just a 1% margin accept a peace deal. After eight days of talks with the conciliation service Acas, Unite said that just 51% of it’s members had backed proposals to end a long-running dispute over job terms and conditions.

In four out of the seven firms involved in the talks, tanker drivers rejected the offer on safety standards and training – but overall the deal will go through, if only by a fine margin.

Diana Holland, Unite assistant general secretary said: ‘This narrow vote in favour lifts the threat of strike action, but leaves the companies with no room for complacency. The progress made through negotiation is testament to the brave stance members have taken in the face of growing insecurity and attacks on their profession. The narrow vote in favour should be a wake-up call for an industry riddled with deep-seated problems. This is why we are writing to the select committee urging them to investigate the instability in the industry.”

Acas welcomed the breakthrough with their chief conciliator Peter Harwood saying: “The dispute was a very complex one and both the employers and the trade union representatives worked very hard during long sessions at Acas to shape a solution that addressed the issues facing the sector.”

The Energy Secretary, Ed Davey said ‘This is the right result for those involved in the dispute and for the economy”

The end of the dispute will put both motorists and UK businesses at ease. The panic surrounding the last proposed strike caused chaos at the pumps as panic buying spread across the UK with many filling stations forced to closed as stocks ran dry.

Stanlow direct action group confirms Chester “go slow” for June 11th

stanlow fuel protest Stanlow direct action group confirms Chester go slow for June 11th

Police protecting a fuel tanker at the last fuel protest in Stanlow

In a recent press release the Stanlow Direction Action group has confirmed that they have organised a traffic “go slow” for this Saturday 11th June . In a departure from recent fuel protests and events in Chester, this protest is aimed at causing disruption in the centre of Chester.

“Our Chester ‘Go Slow’ of which has been set for June the 11th 2011 will be taking place as scheduled, of which will depart Broughton Retail Park, Chester Road, Broughton at 12.00 and will head in to Saltney Ferry with the plan of arriving into Chester City Centre at 13.30 of which an option to continue to Stanlow Refinery will be offered.”

I have been a keen supporter of the Chester fuel protests, however this event is clearly targeted at causing disruption in the heart of the city. Such event is likely to cause misery for shoppers in the centre as well as harming businesses already struggling with fuel costs and the poor state of our economy.

I will continue to report on this weekend’s protest however this type of unproductive protest is likely to harm the group’s support from motorists and press alike. I would also like to point out that the Stanlow Fuel protest group (headed by Kevin Bowker and others) is not associated with the Stanlow direct action group in any way.

Stanlow Fuel protest group ditches spokesman

ian charlesworth 300x199 Stanlow Fuel protest group ditches spokesmanThe fuel protesters targeting Stanlow fuel refinery have dismissed their spokesman over a facebook disbute.

The group has parted company with Ian Charlesworth after claims that he invited EDL and BNP groups to join the protests at the fuel refinery.

In an interview with the Ellesmere Port Pioneer, Founder member Kevin Bowker said: “We have parted company with Mr Charlesworth, due to myself and members of the group becoming increasingly unhappy with many of his ideas. ”

A war of words broke out on the groups facebook page, where Mr Charlesworth’s colourful use of the english language acused the group of becoming a “talking shop”. He went on to acuse the police attending the event of theatening women and children.  These accusations have been robustly dismissed by the Cheshire Police.

The group is set to continue without Mr Charlesworth, we have also been tipped off that another Stanlow Protest is on the horizon for the next future. We’ll keep you updated as usual.

Stanlow protesters remain defiant despite low turn out

stanlow protestors Stanlow protesters remain defiant despite low turn outToday’s protest and go-slow at Stanlow fuel refinery was billed as the “mother of all fuel protests” (well by this site anyway). Estimates of up to 3000 people had been suggested causing traffic chaos on the roads.

In reality the turn out has been much less than many expected. Our sources put numbers in the low hundreds as many chose to stay away from today’s action.

Further problems came as police at Stanlow fuel refinery blockaded the protesters leaving them unable to access the site, with small scuffles breaking out between protesters and police.

Despite this, interest in the protest has been huge. Vast numbers of visitors have been flooding to the site keen for updates. Media coverage at the event itself was substantial with the national and local press in attendance.

The organisers recently confirmed that a small band of around 40 “hardcore” protesters still remain at Stanlow, claiming that tanker movements have been stopped for the past hour.

Personally I am quite taken back by the lack of support this protest has seen, I had expected huge number of protesters “give it to the man”. However, the media storm that surrounded today’s protest was enough to highlight the anguish motorists and businesses are faced with as we try and cope with record fuel prices.

294158523 224x300 Police prevents protestors from blockading Stanlow fuel refineryWe have had confirmation that the Police at Stanlow fuel refinery have prevented protesters from blockading the facility.

In effect they have blockaded the blockade.

Until not the police presence has been simply to protect the protesters and traffic during the go slow.

We are still waiting for an update from the organisers, we’ll report further updates as we get them.

"We'll Shut Stanlow Down"

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past 7 days, you will know that today is the Stanlow Fuel protest and go slow.

Our sources at the event will be keeping us up to date with the day’s proceedings, I’ll keep the updates coming as frequently as I can.

Judging from the media and public interest I’ve have seen for the event in the past couple of days, its very likely that the turnout will be better than expected.

14:54 We been forwarded a video of the convoy leaving Birch Services this after noon. It seems that even a small number of protestors was more than enough to cause huge talbacks of traffic.

More updates to follow

Just a note to all the people that have been emailing in, the site IS supporting the Stanlow protest however we DID NOT organise this event. Your comments should be directed to the organisers via their facebook page

Breaking News: Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade set to last 8 days

FuelShortage Breaking News: Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade set to last 8 daysA  source on twitter informed us this afternoon that the Stanlow Fuel Refinery Blockade is set to last 8 long days, this has been now been officially confirmed by the organisers of Sundays protest.

Stanlow Refinery produces close to 7 million tonnes of petrol and diesel a year and employs over 960 people. The plant is responsible for 15% of the UK’s fuel production.

A blockade of this type for 8 days will sevearly effect fuel supply and distribution, causing shortages across the UK.

We have tried to make contact with the refinery directly but at present they are yet to make a statement regarding the planned blockade.

I  for one will be making sure both our cars are filled this evening… if I can afford it!

We’ll keep you updated throughout the weekend.
