US Hypermilers John and Helen Taylor have yet again rocketed into the record books with another epic FE (fuel efficency) run. Equipped with nothing more than a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE TDI Clean Diesel and one tank of fuel (or gas in the US) they managed an impressive 1,626 miles from the tank. In “American” that’s 84.1 miles per gallon or a whopping 101 MPG if you are from this side of the Atlantic.

The three-day drive road trip started on May 3, 2012 from Houston, TX onwards to  Sterling, Virginia 2 days later. In order to recreate normal driving conditions, the Taylor’s only travelled during daylight hours and carried a respectable 120 (US) pounds of luggage.

“We’re excited to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel,” said John Taylor. “The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet is frugal enough to help us achieve this record.”

Their The previous record for the most miles covered on a single tank of diesel was 1526.6 miles, achieved with a VW Passat 1.6 BlueMotion diesel in Europe.

The Taylor’s have made a whole career out of driving efficiently hypermiling and conduct workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. To date they have collected more than 90 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe.

Head on over to our Hypermiling forum to discuss this.

We all know that car sharing is a great way to cut journeys and save money by how far can you take it? Step in VW and its micro four seater the “Up!”.

VW managed to cram 16 flexible citizens into the pint sized car with no reported injuries. With two in the boot, one on the dashboard, seven on the rear bench, four on the front seats and two in the foot wells. Its not quite the 20 VW managed to squeeze into the new Beetle but still an achievement for a car that is only 3.54 metres long and 1.64 metres wide.

The Up! is set for release in 2012 and no doubt that record will be smashed by contortionists when it hits dealers shelves.

VW to roll out cylinder shut-off in its “four banger” TSI engines

vw tsi VW to roll out cylinder shut off in its four banger TSI engines

VW are have made huge advances in fuel saving technologies recently, with the BlueMotion badge occupying grills ranging from the Polo to Passat.

Volkswagen‘s latest efficiency technology is a cylinder shut-off system which will debut in the new 1.4-litre TSI engine from the start of 2012.  Essentially the system will shut off 2 of the 4 cylinders when the engine meets certain requirements, namely torque and RPM. This reduction should show significant reductions in fuel consumption at lower power levels and cruising speeds.

This technology certainly isn’t new but it marks a step forward for VW and its green thinking. Expect to see this joining the other BlueMotion technologies already proving that VW are leading the way with fuel saving tech.

Passat Bluemotion breaks world record on a single tank of fuel

A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion driven by journalist Gavin Conway writing for The Sunday Times has set a new Guinness World Record for the distance travelled by a production passenger car on a single tank of fuel.

In setting the record the Passat BlueMotion travelled a distance of 1,531-miles, the equivalent of driving from London to Malaga, without needing to refuel or travelling from Los Angeles to New York with a single stop for fuel.

Powered by a Volkswagen 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine developing 105 PS, the Passat BlueMotion used for the record attempt was a standard production model. In common with the Polo and Golf BlueMotion models, the Passat is fitted with aerodynamic modifications to the bodywork, a lower ride height, Stop-Start, programmed battery charging, longer gearing and low rolling resistance tyres. The result is a vehicle that is completely conventional to drive, service and maintain yet among the most efficient vehicles on the road today.
