Fair Fuel UK Campaign needs just 34,000 more signatures

fair fuel uk Fair Fuel UK Campaign needs just 34,000 more signatures

Headed by motoring “authority” Quentin Willson, the Fair Fuel UK Campaign is making good ground raising the profile of the ridiculous fuel duty crippling the UK. Their e-petition has been signed by over 66,000 but needs to make the magic 100,000 before parliament has to listen.

The petition calls for the scrapping of planned duty increases in January and August 2012 of 4p. The extra duty would push fuel prices to unseen levels, causing misery for motorists and businesses across the UK. It also calls for pressure on oil companies to pass on cheaper oil prices, an offical commission to look at market competitiveness and a fuel price stabilisation mechanism.

A fair fuel stabiliser has already been introduced but the boys at number 10 are keeping mum on its use so far.

Please support the campaign for lower fuel prices and sign the e-petiton on the direct.gov website.

Obama steps in over US fuel prices while the UK government still flounders

barack obama speech1 Obama steps in over US fuel prices while the UK government still floundersPresident Obama stated that the US can not “drill its way out” of the surging fuel prices that have been plaguing American motorists and businesses, however he promised to do all he could to stabilize fuel prices.

Speaking at a White House news conference aimed at calming U.S. consumers’ fears of high gas prices, he said they had the resources to “tap” US fuel reserves if necessary but  declined to say what price threshold would trigger such intervention.

The average American household will spend about $700 more for fuel in 2011 than it spent last year, the Energy Department said this week.

The UK government has been “talking” of the introduction of measures to help stabilise UK fuel prices, however even pressure from the Labour party has been unsuccessful. For now UK motorist will have to carry on… being taken to the cleaners.

Morrisons looses £400m due to rising fuel prices, gains it on the forecourt

Their figures show that much of this money simply moved from the checkout to the fuel forecourt. Morrisons fuel sales benefited from higher oil prices, rising 18% over the last year on a like-for-like basis. That boosted its total turnover from petrol and diesel by over £530m, lucky them!

If this trend is “the norm” for other UK fuel and food retailers, the increased turn over has been a windfall for the government who are yet to introduced the mythical “fare fuel stabiliser”.

With £400m less food on the table and an extra £530m in our fuel tanks just from Morrisons alone, it seems to many that something going very wrong for UK motorists. Again the AA has urged Mr Cameron and other expense fiddling cronies to make a reduction in fuel dity and VAT, as expected, its falled on dumb deaf ears.

The Sun are petitioning  Chancellor George Osborne to scrap the April 1 fuel duty hike or honour a pre-Election pledge to bring in a fair fuel stabiliser.

Their landmark figure of 152,000 signatories was achieved as pump prices hit a new high, with unleaded stands at an eye-watering 129.86p a litre, diesel at 135.11.

Hundreds more drivers and petrol retailers signed up to the campaign yesterday after our Page 3 girls visited the International Forecourt and Fuels Exhibition in Birmingham.

Brian Madderson, chairman of RMI Petrol Retailers Association, said: “The Sun campaign has got the nation going.

Green Alliance warns against cutting fuel duty

petrol pump Green Alliance warns against cutting fuel dutyPleas from industry to cut petrol duty would cost the government £6bn and lead to a “fiscal black hole” in public finances that would have to be filled by raising other taxes, or by more painful public spending cuts, a green thinktank (Green Alliance) warned on Tuesday.

Under current plans, taxes on petrol should rise slightly this April, to help the government meet its greenhouse gas targets and encourage energy efficiency.

But the government has come under fierce pressure from industry lobbyists to forego the planned rise, and instead use taxes to help stabilise the price of fuel. That would mean reducing the tax when oil prices are rising, to smooth out spikes.

Petrol prices are at record highs, after a sharp rise in the crude oil price. Fuel duty is now at about 59p a litre, and motorists have also been hit by the rise in VAT rates.

UK hits back at OPEC’s claim that we are to blame for rise in fuel prices

1252540805 UK hits back at OPECs claim that we are to blame for rise in fuel pricesBritain hit back at suggestions made by Abdalla el-Badri, secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), that the government is responsible for record fuel prices.

El-Badri said in an interview with the Times newspaper that pump prices reflect U.K. taxation rather than OPEC policy and that the government is making more money than the producers.

“Clearly an increase in oil price does have an impact on petrol prices,” Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman, Steve Field, told reporters in London today. “If you look at recent rises in petrol prices, the majority of the increase is accounted for by non-tax factors, i.e. margins and the price of crude.”

Chancellor George Osborne hints at fuel price help in budget

uk budget 23 june 2010 Chancellor George Osborne hints at fuel price help in budget

Is this a ploy to settle increasing action by protest groups on fuel prices?

Help for hard-pressed motorists could be on the way after Chancellor George Osborne gave a strong signal he will tackle rising fuel prices in his Budget in March.

He said he was looking at two things, the first would be “overriding” the fuel duty due to come into force in April which was announced by Alistair Darling when he was chancellor.

The second option would be a “stabiliser” – when the oil price goes up, the Government gets more revenue and they help the motorist by reducing the tax.

In an interview, Mr Osborne said drivers would have to wait for March 23, the Budget.

He said the price of fuel had increased partly because the cost of oil has gone up dramatically to around 100 US dollars a barrel, but also due to tax rises announced before he took office.

Asked if he can tackle the April rise, Mr Osborne told BBC West Midlands: “We can override it – we’re looking at it.”
