vw up car sharing VW Up! shows off some Epic car sharing

We all know that car sharing is a great way to cut journeys and save money by how far can you take it? Step in VW and its micro four seater the “Up!”.

VW managed to cram 16 flexible citizens into the pint sized car with no reported injuries. With two in the boot, one on the dashboard, seven on the rear bench, four on the front seats and two in the foot wells. Its not quite the 20 VW managed to squeeze into the new Beetle but still an achievement for a car that is only 3.54 metres long and 1.64 metres wide.

The Up! is set for release in 2012 and no doubt that record will be smashed by contortionists when it hits dealers shelves.

VW to roll out cylinder shut-off in its “four banger” TSI engines

vw tsi VW to roll out cylinder shut off in its four banger TSI engines

VW are have made huge advances in fuel saving technologies recently, with the BlueMotion badge occupying grills ranging from the Polo to Passat.

Volkswagen‘s latest efficiency technology is a cylinder shut-off system which will debut in the new 1.4-litre TSI engine from the start of 2012.  Essentially the system will shut off 2 of the 4 cylinders when the engine meets certain requirements, namely torque and RPM. This reduction should show significant reductions in fuel consumption at lower power levels and cruising speeds.

This technology certainly isn’t new but it marks a step forward for VW and its green thinking. Expect to see this joining the other BlueMotion technologies already proving that VW are leading the way with fuel saving tech.

Volkswagen to launch a 100MPG Golf, the blue-e-motion

golf blue e motion Volkswagen to launch a 100MPG Golf, the blue e motionVolkswagen is set to launch a 100mpg Golf in 2020, in time to meet super-stringent EU fuel economy regulations. Senior VW sources told Autocar that the greenest Golf — likely to be the blue-e-motion — is expected to have an average CO2 rating of just 75g/km.

Planned European Union regulations require the average fuel economy across a maker’s entire range to average just 95g/km by 2020, which is forcing car makers into considering radical methods to drive down consumption.

Launched as part of the Mk8 Golf line-up, the super-frugal car will feature much of the technology featured in the new Volkswagon XL1. But it’s expected to get a next-generation version of the two-cylinder hybrid powertrain.

A combination of improved combustion technology and new materials should allow the engine to have a higher power density and still use slightly less fuel.

However, VW sources say the super-frugal Golf will also have to see significant friction reduction and aerodynamic improvement as well as a big weight loss. Carbon-reinforced plastics could be used for the bonnet and roof panels, for example, and heavy sound deadening is likely to be replaced by a sound cancellation system working through the car’s audio.

Passat Bluemotion breaks world record on a single tank of fuel

A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion driven by journalist Gavin Conway writing for The Sunday Times has set a new Guinness World Record for the distance travelled by a production passenger car on a single tank of fuel.

In setting the record the Passat BlueMotion travelled a distance of 1,531-miles, the equivalent of driving from London to Malaga, without needing to refuel or travelling from Los Angeles to New York with a single stop for fuel.

Powered by a Volkswagen 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine developing 105 PS, the Passat BlueMotion used for the record attempt was a standard production model. In common with the Polo and Golf BlueMotion models, the Passat is fitted with aerodynamic modifications to the bodywork, a lower ride height, Stop-Start, programmed battery charging, longer gearing and low rolling resistance tyres. The result is a vehicle that is completely conventional to drive, service and maintain yet among the most efficient vehicles on the road today.
